Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our shop has both heating and air conditioning. We have big garage doors on either side of the building and will typically open them up to get air moving through when the weather is nice. If it's colder, we have large overhead space heaters that help to keep the shop comfortable.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

Here at the shop our team is made up of 14 people. We typically work as a larger team, considering the vast spectrum of knowledge we are pulling from. Work is overseen by our shop manager, or divided into mechanicals, paint, or metalwork and overseen by long-tenured members of the staff.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Our shop is open from 8:00AM - 5PM Monday through Friday. Technicians are expected to work 40 hours each week. Most technicians will hit 40 hours by Friday afternoon around 2-3PM depending on morning arrival times.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We expect most technicians to have their own sets of tools for more standard work. We also have welders, sandblasters, and specialty tools available for technicians to use when needed.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have a break area on the second floor of the building with seating, a microwave, and restrooms for our team.

How many bays does your shop have?

Our detailing side of the shop has 3 bays typically used for assembly and detailing. A dedicated paint booth and lots of open space for technicians to work on up to 10 cars in the "clean side" of the building. On the Mechanical and metal side, we have 5 bays for technicians to work and two 2 post lifts for techs to get the cars up in the air. We also have a small Quonset hut that is used for fiberglass work and some minor repairs with another bay.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

As a classic car restoration shop our system is built around a two-week system in which owners provide an allotted amount of money for repairs and work to be completed. Once the work is done or the money has run out, we will contact the owners to continue repair and restoration work on the vehicles. We typically have anywhere from 15-20 cars in the building for repairs and restoration with cash flowing into these projects bi-weekly.

What is your parts ordering process?

Our shop manager and parts manager work tirelessly with our technicians to ensure we're ordering these ever-so-specific and aging parts. Our parts manager works side-by-side with techs to ensure the proper parts are ordered and replacement parts are correct to the vehicle.

What is your policy on side work?

We are happy our technicians and staff have side projects and business they are working on. Many of our staff have classics or bikes they work on outside the shop. We can provide space and tools from time to time, but this will typically be on weekends when there's room for techs to work.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Our shop prides ourselves on the mastery of these classics. We hope you have the same passion for these rarities and icons!

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Our team is well-versed in many aspects of restoration and new technicians are always invited to grow their skills and continue to refine their knowledge, often older technicians will share their insights and help to ensure younger techs are properly restoring rather than "rehang and replace".

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

As a Concours level restoration shop, we have many connections within the concours world and help our technicians find their perfect fit as they continue to develop their knowledge on ALL brands of classics.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Because of the specifics of restoration, our team is often checking over one-another's work. While we do offer typical 90-day reviews for new hires, we also are regularly checking on the restoration process to ensure everything is done to "factory-correct" standards.

What type of safety training is required?

We ask that technicians are OSHA certified, ASE certifications also help.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Our older techs are often heads of their particular specialty: Mechanical, body, paint etc. Newer techs will have these older techs for insight to help guide the restoration process, as well as the older techs overlooking work to ensure everything is done correctly.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Our shop is always continuing to grow in the community, we are involved with many of the concours events around the state and with our electric conversions we are working with local colleges to help guide them in their own conversions.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We are beginning to work with some colleges and high schools to help "save" the classic restoration community as many of the older techs are getting into retirement age.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

As we continue to grow our electric conversion business, we will continue to also work on original classics, but hopefully we will see lots of growth with the electric conversion community. Hoping to continue our seven-figure restorations while helping younger enthusiasts get into the world of electric classics!

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We do offer an application which takes about 20 minutes to fill out. We also accept a resume with examples of previous work.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We typically have a single phone screening where we chat about basic experience and previous work experience.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Our in-person interviews often show applicants around our shop, facilities, and showroom. We then work with applicants to do some basic proof of skills and technical ability.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We do ask applicants complete both a background check and drug screening to be hired.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We typically have a skill assessment built around the applicant and their previous experience. If you're a body man, we would have assessments built around bodywork and proving learned skills.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

We will respond to all applicants as timely as we can. Offers or rejections will be sent within 2 weeks of initial technician outreach to the shop.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Our hiring process typically takes between 1 1/2 weeks and two weeks depending on applicants' ability to come in for in-person skills assessments.
