Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our shop is heated, has fans, misters, and we often leave bay doors open to allow for air flow.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

5 Technicians, 3 people on our Fabrication Team, and 6 Service/Parts Writers, and our Shop Manager.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Monday – Friday 7am – 4pm or 8am - 5pm (Two shifts available)

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

A/C machine, lifts, welders, plasma cutter, brake lathe, cutoff saw

What type of break room facility is provided?

BBQ grill, lunch table, microwave, microwave oven, water, refrigerator, a/c or heat available

How many bays does your shop have?

We currently have 5 bays.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We average 175 Repair orders including our Mobile Service

What is your parts ordering process?

Our technicians send a parts request to the Service Advisor and a Parts Writer to quote the parts on their ticket. If approved, the Parts Writer will place the order and advise once the parts arrive.

What is your policy on side work?

See shop manager for details.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We have an amazing family-like atmosphere and we take great care of our technicians including appreciation lunches, holiday parties, department outings, and our tool/boot allowance. WE ARE DRAMA FREE!

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

DOT training, wheel chair lift training, electric vehicle training, welding classes, and more based on current skill.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

All new job postings are offered to current employees first. Davey Coach likes to promote from within so hard work always pays off.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Annual review with one on one sit down.

What type of safety training is required?

Minor training, handbook guidelines, forklift training, shop safety, respirators, welding equipment, and any quarterly training from from our safety committee.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Our more experienced technicians will take younger apprentice technicians under their wing and have them shadow to gain experience and understanding of how and why things work. The younger technicians will shadow our experienced techs in the shop and they will go out on the mobile truck. With this experience, not only do they grow their technical skillset, but they also begin to learn the importance of customer relationships on the road and in the shop.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We buy all of our fuel and tires locally, we support other local auto shops, AND we have our annual Customer Appreciation Day. Once a year we BBQ and have training classes to help our customers get the most out of their buses!

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We are currently working with WyoTech and Lincoln College for recruiting.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

Our biggest opportunity is growing our mobile service. With limited space in the shop, we will continue growing our mobile service to diagnose and repair most of our retail work. That will leave bigger jobs for the shop, and all PM service and minor repairs for the mobile service. In five years we want to have 5+ full-time mobile mechanics and 6 full-time shop mechanics.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

Davey Coach gives the experienced mechanic a chance to get out of the "dog eat dog", commission-based shop, and instead, work as a team with other hourly employees. In a more relaxed environment everyone can reach our common goals like creating a great work place, providing quality repairs, and give our customers the best service possible.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Yes, the form usually takes less than 5 minutes to complete.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Applicants are phone screened by a recruiter and then an in-person interview is scheduled with the Service Manager, Assistant Manager, and/or a Team Lead.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

In-person interviews are scheduled with the Service Manager, Assistant Manager, and/or a Team Lead. A few basic questions are asked, including some technical questions in regards to the job role, what the potential hire is looking for in the job, what hours and days he or she can work, and what he or she values in a job. If the interview goes well, we will give the candidate an in-person tour of the facility.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?
