Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

We have 3 shops our Main shop and Heavy Duty truck shop are air conditioned. Our used vehicle shop is not.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We currently have 19 main line technicians. 6 Heavy Duty Truck shop technicians. 8 quick lane technicians. 2 used car technicians.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

The dealership is open Monday through Friday 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Saturday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Closed on Sundays. Main line technicians work 7-5 or 8-6. Quick lane work 7-4 or 10-7.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We have all the Ford Special Service tools. Alignment racks, wheel balancers, brake lathes, tire machines, hydraulic presses, IDS lap tops, car pushers, jump boxes and many more.

What type of break room facility is provided?

There are two break rooms one on the sales show room side and the technician break room is currently under renovation.

How many bays does your shop have?

We have 51 lifts 13 flat bays

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We average 1100 - 1500 customer pay Ros. 250 - 500 warranty ROs. 300-400 internal RO's

What is your parts ordering process?

We utilize X-Time inspect to perform vehicle multipoint inspections. When the technicians add recommended service lines and specify what parts they need for the job they will send the estimate electronically for parts department to quote the necessary parts to complete the job. Once parts is finished with quoting the necessary parts for the job the quote is sent to the advisor who makes it presentable for the Guest. The Advisor will send the quote to the Guest and review with them. Once the Guest can approve directly from their phone or email or the advisor can approve the repair. Once the repair is approved the parts department is notified through X-time and the parts are ordered. Simple efficient and easy.

What is your policy on side work?

Side work is not permitted.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We offer access all manufacturer training online and classroom when available. The Coggin group holds in house training sessions every other week at different dealerships where technicians will attend from 4-6 pm for classes on ; Brakes, A/C, Suspension, Electrical, Maintenance and more. Classes consist of 1 hour class time and 1 hour of hands on practical application.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

There are opportunities from starting as an entry level technician to grow from a D - Level to an A - Level tech through training, performance and practical application.

Can you describe your performance review process?

When you are hired there is a 30 day, 90 day, 6 month and annual. After your first year there are only annual performance reviews. Reviews are process through our Ultipro business management system. The team member is notified that they will have a self assessment of their performance. After that is complete and sent to management they review and complete their assessment and schedule a review with the team member.

What type of safety training is required?

We have our Asbury Hub which has access to lift safety, eye protection training and more.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

The shop is very communal and everyone helps on another. If there is down time younger technicians will shadow more senior technicians. We assign apprentices to mentors in the shop to learn inspection process and technical training.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

As part of Asbury Automotive Group, Coggin Ford Jacksonville has worked in part to add to the great success of Asbury. We aim to live up to the Asbury Automotive motto, to be "The most guest centric automotive retailer". In 2021, We raised over $170,000 for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) through the HBCU Change Program as well as $37,113 for Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Our CEO and Vice President of Corporate Development and Real Estate maintain oversight of our energy management approach.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We participate in local schools advisory boards and events at J-Tech, FSCJ, and First Coast Technical to foster relationships.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

Increased service department volume to 2000 plus CP traffic count monthly. Competing for the top 3 positions in customer satisfaction in the district. Growing 3-5 technicians annually from our quick lane department. Consistently growing the next generation of A, B, and C level technicians to foster a growth envionment.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Applications are online at https://www.asburycareers.com They take approximately 30 min - 60 min. If you have a prepared resume to upload the process is faster. We have a service focus assessment called the caliper and it is approximately 60 question that give insight on where you fit in on the service focus spectrum.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Applicants are called for a phone screen and scheduling an interview.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

In person interviews include interviewing with the Service Director, Service Manager and Shop Foreman.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We do perform background checks, drug screens and personality tests before a candidate is eligible for hire.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No skill assessment is performed.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

1-5 business days.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

From application to background check clear can be anywhere from 3 - 21 days depending on the complexity of the candidates background.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $83,200 - $143,000/year ($40.00 - $68.75/hr)

Compensation is based on Flat rate production starting at $40.00 per hour up to $55.00 including production bonuses. Upper end salary based on 50 production hours weekly at $50.00 flat rate plus $5.00 additional flat rate bonus for production over 50 hours. Bonus is retroactive to first hour produced. Lower end salary based on 40 production hours weekly at $40.00 flat.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $62,400 - $117,000/year ($30.00 - $56.25/hr)

Compensation is based on Flat rate production starting at $30.00 per hour up to $45.00 including production bonuses. Upper end salary based on 50 production hours weekly at $40.00 flat rate plus $5.00 additional flat rate bonus for production over 50 hours. Bonus is retroactive to first hour produced. Lower end salary based on 40 production hours weekly at $30.00 flat rate.

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $41,600 - $91,000/year ($20.00 - $43.75/hr)

Compensation is based on Flat rate production starting at $20.00 per hour up to $35.00 including production bonuses. Upper end salary based on 50 production hours weekly at $30.00 flat rate plus $5.00 additional flat rate bonus for production over 50 hours. Bonus is retroactive to first hour produced. Lower end salary based on 40 production hours weekly at $20.00 flat rate.

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $31,200 - $41,600/year ($15.00 - $20.00/hr)

Compensation is $15.00 hourly plus weekly production bonuses for hours produced. 25 hours produced equals a $60.00 weekly bonus. 30 hours produced equals $120.00 weekly bonus. 35 hours produced equals $200.00 weekly bonus.

Service Advisor
Service Advisors are primarily customer focused and, as one of the faces of the shop, they are critical in keeping customers happy. Service Advisors are frequently focused on taking customer calls, relaying information to technicians, and selling repair jobs. Both technical and sales experience are helpful for this position.
Pay Range: $50,000 - $120,000/year

Advisor pay is 14% of customer pay labor gross profit and 10% of warranty labor gross profit. There is a 4% bonus on customer pay gross for being above district in CSI score. Spiffs on Tires, Brakes, Batteries = $5.00, Spiffs on Alignments = $10.00. Spiffs on Air filter, A/C filter, and wiper blades = $2.00.

My name is Jacob Beam I am a Ford Senior Master Technician and Team Leader here at Coggin Ford. I am also am a lead instructor for Coggin Automotive groups technician development program. I have been a technician for 7 years.
