Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shop is heated in the winter and use fans and provide Gatorade and water on ice in the shop for technicians.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We currently have 9 technicians 2 interns one from Ohio Technical College and another from a local JVS diesel program.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

The shop hours are from 7am - 11:30pm Monday through Friday and 7am - 1pm Saturday. 1st shift is from 7am - 3:30pm 2nd shift is from 3:00pm to 11:30pm.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

The shop provides all product specific Freightliner, Cummins, Cat, Eaton and Allison tooling and test equipment. The shop also provides 3/4 torque wrench 1in impact and misc. other specialty tooling.

What type of break room facility is provided?

There is a breakroom with vending machines, microwaves, refrigerator and toaster oven. The breakroom has silverware, cups and napkins for employees. The facility also provides 2 covered picnic tables and a grille for use by employees during breaks.

How many bays does your shop have?

The shop has 16 bays with work benches, air lines, stand grinders and vices.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

180-250 per month.

What is your parts ordering process?

There is a dedicated back counter parts professional who handles the shop technicians.

What is your policy on side work?

The policy is no side work or moonlighting is allowed by employees.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

The shop has a very positive environment with a great Foreman with over 25 years experience. The department focuses on teaching and continual development of all technicians.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Yes the technicians are continually being trained and updated on all Freightliner and other OEM products.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

The opportunities for career growth are varied and diversified as the Valley Group currently has 14 rooftops that cover Freightliner, Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram and Dodge plus a body shop and body builder (Cenweld) facility.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Technicians once hired will be reviewed at 30, 60, 90 days and then once a year after that.

What type of safety training is required?

The safety training required is through OSHA and is done online durring new hire orientation period.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Younger technicians will shadow on large repairs and basic maintenance repairs based on workload and job availability.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Valley is involved with several community organizations included both The Cleveland and Akron food banks. Valley also donates to and participates in several charities.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Yes, we are involved and participates with Maplewood Career Center and Medina Career Center. Valley is also Partnered with Ohio Technical College in Cleveland with the Freightliner Get Ahead program.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

20 technicians, and 400 plus repair orders a month.

Valley offers Training and Education Assistance/Reimbursement. Support local Community sponsored Agricultural programs.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Yes it usually takes 5 minutes to complete.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

No we do not phone screen. A in person interview will be set up.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

The candidate comes in and does an in person interview with the service manager. The topics will range from work experience, personal experience, our shop culture, expectations for candidate and any expectations the candidate has for their career.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes we perform background checks and drug screening.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No the interview process is the assessment.

Usually no more than a week.

It is personable and candidates are kept up to date through the entire process.

Student Tech / Apprentice Pay Range: $17.00 - $19.00/hour

Based on Vocational program through Highschool or through a technical College such as OTC or UTI.

Service Advisor Pay Range: $40,000.00 - $45,000.00/year

Yearly income does not reflect department bonus and incentive programs.

A Level Technician Pay Range: $70,000.00 - $94,000.00/year

Hourly pay based on skill and ability, range of repairs able to perform and diagnostic ability

B Level Technician Pay Range: $50,000.00 - $66,500.00/year

Hourly pay based on skill and ability, range of repairs able to perform and diagnostic ability

C Level Technician Pay Range: $42,000.00 - $49,000.00/year

Hourly pay based on skill and ability, range of repairs able to perform and diagnostic ability
