What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

2 to 3 advisors with 5 to 6 other technicians

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

7:00am-7:00pm (Monday-Friday) 8:00am-5:00pm, Scheduled from 7:15am-5:00pm (Saturday)

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We offer a variety of specialty tools and major equipment for technicians

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have a break room with a refrigerator, coffee machine, microwave, table, sink, hot/cold water disbursement machine and several vending machines

How many bays does your shop have?

45 bays with 2 alignment racks

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We are currently averaging between 3750 to 3800 RO's per month

What is your parts ordering process?

Tech will submit the list of parts for the repair and the advisor will approve them with the parts department.

What is your policy on side work?

Associates are not allowed to work on any side work at the dealership, however they can work on their own personal vehicles and help with their family vehicles.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

In addition to factory specific training, we offer tuition assistance to our teammates and their family through Bellevue University.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We look to promote from within whenever possible. We have developed an apprenticeship program for technicians that are new to the business.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We perform annual performance reviews.

What type of safety training is required?

Online safety training as well as facility inspections are performed by our corporate Risk Management team.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

The apprenticeship program offers a structured path to achieve knowledge and certification. Apprentice technicians are typically paired with a Master level technician who will follow a timeline to prepare the apprentice for success.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Community involvement is a core belief at Sonic Automotive. Our stores are encouraged to be involved with the communities they serve.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

As a company, Sonic Automotive works with as many local high schools and technical schools as possible to promote a career in automotive repair. This includes sponsoring classrooms, doing lunch and learns, speaking with students and parents at open houses, and participating in career fairs.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We are planning on adding to the building so more bays can be added to the shop as we continue to grow our customer base.

Our Talent Development and Training teams have earned many awards and accolades including being inducted in Training Magazine's Hall of Fame

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We have an online application process that is very user friendly and should only take a few minutes to complete. In some cases, depending on which state you apply in, at the time of an interview we have the applicant complete an additional paper form.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We usually perform a quick phone screening prior to scheduling an interview.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

The in person interview usually consists of 1-2 dealership associates conducting the interview. During both the phone interview and in-person interview the candidate is given an opportunity to ask any questions that they may have about the job, our benefits, and company culture.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We do perform background and drug tests on all applicants. A reasonably clean driving record is required. we do employ an online assessment as a tool to get to know the candidate more than just what is on their resume.

No, skills are assessed through the discovery process during the interviews

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

That depends on the quantity of applicants, but our goal is to give candidate feedback on their candidacy in a timely manner.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Once a hiring decision has been made the process takes roughly 5 business days on average to complete the drug and background checks.

The process may be different depending on the position you are applying for

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $62,000 - $89,000/year ($29.81 - $42.79/hr)

Master or MDT skill level technician that can perform all aspects of repairs to customer vehicles. Electrical Diagnosis, Transmission Diagnosis, AC diagnosis, Complete engine rebuilds, and perform all B, C, & D technician services.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $48,000 - $59,000/year ($23.08 - $28.37/hr)

Expert Level Technician that can perform some Electrical Diagnosis, Engine Diagnosis, AC/Heating Diagnosis, some Transmission Diagnosis and perform all services that a C, D level technician perform.

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $38,000 - $46,000/year ($18.27 - $22.12/hr)

Certified Technician, Performs Brake service, charging system, starting issues, power steering issues, fuel services and exhaust system.

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $31,200 - $37,440/year ($15.00 - $18.00/hr)

Maintenance level technician, perform oil service, filters, wipers, batteries, tires and alignments
