Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Yes. Both Heat and A/C. We believe in providing our technicians with a comfortable work facility so they can perform at their best.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We have 13 technicians(10 line techs, 2 apprentice techs, and one lube tech)

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

The hours of operation for the department are 7-6 Mon-Sat. Technicians shifts are staggered from 7-4:30 to 8-5:30. 5-day work week with Saturday rotations.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Brand new Hunter in-ground alignment machine, Hunter tire machine and Hunter Balancer. All VW Special equipment/tools required by the manufacturer. The usual trans/engine jacks, work benchs, parts washer, Computers, we have 6 operational VW scan-tools laptops, A/C machines, battery testers, etc. Technicians hvae their own tool box and personal tools. We do offer for purchase or lease a Sonic VW basic tool box and set of tools if interested.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Upstairs employee lounge is available for all employees. Comfortable and spacious room, with tables and chairs that may be use to eat lunch, or just watch TV. Fridge, Ice machine, and Parts convenience store offering snacks and drinks for purchase.

How many bays does your shop have?

14 bays + the alignment rack.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Range from 900-1,100 depending on the season

What is your parts ordering process?

Our VW warehouse in Knoxville is able to provide us with next day parts as long as it makes the stock order by 12:00pm. Otherwise, they will arrive the following day for standard orders. We do have the ability to do overnight freight with warranty repairs as long as the order is placed by 3:00pm o get them here next day.

What is your policy on side work?

No side work policy. Technicians are welcomed to work on their own personal cars outside their regular scheduled shift or on their day off..

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

At Checkered Flag VW, we are proud of our family-like work environment. We care for everyone of our members and we operate as a family more than a business. We work together towards common goals and help each other in any way we can.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Yes. Every technician attends at least one if not more VW manufacturer training class in Jessup, MD. We compensate with training time and cover all the expenses for the trip and training. We also have a very extensive online training modules and continuous learning through the VW Certification website.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We love to promote from within! Many of our current employees advanced from entry level positions.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We believe in checking in with our employees daily, the shop foreman reports to every technician every morning the previous day performance. We also do weekly reviews to ensure we provide support to anyone that is in need. We also have a more formal (written) performance check-in/review process we perform every 6 months.

What type of safety training is required?

We require a safety training through KPA.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We have 4 master technicians in the shop (A shop foreman and 3 team leaders) that work closely with new technicians and assist in any way needed. The shop foreman bay is located in the middle of the shop and each of the master technicians are located strategically around the shop, so new techs always have a mentor available working right next to their bay for assistance.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We love to give back to our community! 89% of Checkered Flag employees pledged a total of $197k in United Way donations for 2020. Employees volunteer their time to work on various projects like the United Way Day of Caring, can drives, Clean the Bay Day, and much more!

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We have several partnerships with local schools in the area! We give students interested in an automotive career opportunities for hands-on experience.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We continue to grow our business, over the last 5 years we have increase our performance in sales, gross, and volume by 220%. I expect the same type of growth if not more over the next 5 years.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

We really like to promote from within and we believe in taking care of our employees. This is why 75% of our technicians have been working here for at least 8 years, with the most tenured ones having 25+ years careers at Checkered Flag and still counting!

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We have applications on our website that take typically 10-15 minutes

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We phone screen all applicants before an in-person interview

What do your in-person interviews entail?

I will normally allocate at least 1 hour for in-person interviews. We will talk and get to know each other and see if this family environment will be a good fit for each other. I always like to show the facility and introduce candidates to our team members. Anything you want to know, we can cover during the interview.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We perform background checks, drug screens, and driving record checks

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No. I believe our relationship should start with the right foot, so I will trust that applicants will give a fair description of their skill level and we'll take your word for it.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

I like to make all my decisions with 1-2 weeks after an in-person interview.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $70,000 - $120,000/year

Line Tech pay-plans are based on production. Flat Rate pay varies according to skillset and certifications. Production bonuses range from $1.50 per FRH to $5.00 per FRH on top of the hourly rate. With this type of pay structure, you make your own pay-plan. We do not limit how much you can work. Top producers can make over $100k per year comfortably.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $50,000 - $120,000/year

Line Tech pay-plans are based on production. Flat Rate pay varies according to skillset and certifications. Production bonuses range from $1.50 per FRH to $5.00 per FRH on top of the hourly rate. With this type of pay structure, you make your own pay-plan. We do not limit how much you can work. Top producers can make over $100k per year comfortably.

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $12 - $14/year ($0.01 - $0.01/hr)

Lube Techs start at $12 plus production bonuses. .

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $12 - $13/hour

Apprentice technicians start at $12.50 per hour plus production bonus. If you are a VA State inspector then this position starts at $13.50 + production bonuses. You will be working with a 20+ year experience VW Master technician. Depending on individual performance, apprenticeships can take anywhere from 3 month to 1+ years before being promoted to line technician. We will always make sure we set you up for success when you join the VW Service Team, so this is why this apprentice program is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to make a career in the industry.
