Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our shop is both heated and air conditioned. We want our Techs to be as comfortable as possible when working in the shop.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

1 Service Manager. We have 15+ Techs at our location that includes people on our express team. Our express team works in 2 man teams.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Monday - Saturday 7am to 6pm Techs work from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM and have a 5 day work week. Techs work every other Saturday and when it's their week to work a Saturday, they will get a day off that week. The day off during the week is consistent.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We provide all of the factory tools and each team has it's own diagnostic computer. We also have Hunter tire changers/balancers, an alignment rack and a lot of other general shop tools to make life easy for Techs. Techs do need to supply their own tools and we supply secure, built-in tool boxes in portions of our shop.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Our climate controlled break room is ultra clean equipped with a TV, microwave oven and refrigerators. It is located away from the hustle of the service department.

What is your parts ordering process?

Daily orders . We have 2 Parts Counter people that are dedicated to our service department. Everything we do is electronic and makes it easy on Techs to avoid time spent standing around the parts counter.

What is your policy on side work?

While we don't allow side work in our shop, we do allow our Techs to work on their personal vehicles and their families vehicles with an open repair order for insurance purposes.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We take pride in our facility and fix things when it breaks. We have high standards in our shop to help drive employee and customer satisfaction.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We pay for all factory training and expenses associated with it for our Techs. We believe in ongoing training and use it as part of our career path. We also incentivize our Techs once they complete certifications.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We love to promote from within! Many of our current employees advanced from entry level positions.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We have a formal written process and verbal discussion that takes place every 6 months. We do them every July and January.

What type of safety training is required?

We require a safety training through KPA.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We have a very hands on mentorship program and cater it to the individual. Our typical process takes a person who's spent 12 months in our express lane, works them into an apprentice where they work directly with one a mentor.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We love to give back to our community! 89% of Checkered Flag employees pledged a total of $197k in United Way donations for 2020. Employees volunteer their time to work on various projects like the United Way Day of Caring, can drives, Clean the Bay Day, and much more!

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We have several partnerships with local schools in the area! We give students interested in an automotive career opportunities for hands-on experience.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

Our Management team is loyal to our company and we are focused on growth to keep the shop full, our Techs well trained and a positive team oriented culture

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

We rent out a big facility have an annual picnic for our company. Once a year, we do a 3 month competition for our top Technician to receive an all inclusive trip.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We have applications on our website that take typically 10-15 minutes

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We phone screen all applicants before an in-person interview

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Our Service Manager does an in person interview and then gives the candidate a tour of the shop. The interview lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how many questions the Tech would have.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We perform background checks, drug screens, and driving record checks

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We do not perform any skill assessment.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

We make our decisions quick and typically make our decision within 1 to 2 days.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Somewhere between 3 to 5 days depending on how long the background check takes to come back.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

We do offer a sign-on bonus for qualified applicants.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $95,000 - $150,000/year

We consider an A Level Tech to have Factory level certification and 5+ years of experience. We also feel that A Level Techs need to be able to perform advanced diagnostics and most repairs. Pay is based on Flat Rate per hour. We also offer a production bonus based on hours produced. Over 50 Hours - +$1.50 per hour Over 60 Hours - +$3.00 per hour Over 70 Hours - +$5.00 per hour On top of that, we offer an annual retention bonus based on the amount of time you're with the company. B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $75,000 - $95,000/year

We consider a B level Tech to have the ability to do light diagnostic and general repair. A "B" level Tech is considered to have 2+ years of experience. Pay is based on Flat Rate per hour. We also offer a production bonus based on hours produced. Over 50 Hours - +$1.50 per hour Over 60 Hours - +$3.00 per hour Over 70 Hours - +$5.00 per hour On top of that, we offer an annual retention bonus based on the amount of time you're with the company. C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $55,000 - $75,000/year

We consider a C Level Technician to be the next level after being a Lube Tech. A C Level Tech is able to independently do maintenance and light repair. A "C" level Tech is more of an entry level role for a Tech with less experience but able to do maintenance/repairs on their own. Pay is based on Flat Rate per hour. We also offer a production bonus based on hours produced. Over 50 Hours - +$1.50 per hour Over 60 Hours - +$3.00 per hour Over 70 Hours - +$5.00 per hour On top of that, we offer an annual retention bonus based on the amount of time you're with the company. Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $31,250 - $45,000/year ($15.02 - $21.63/hr)

Starting off as a Lube Technician can be a great way to get in the door with Checkered Flag. We lay out a career path in order to help you progress. We pay for your schooling and we also work with a local Tech school to provide you with the training you need. We also prepare you for your State Inspectors License test.
