Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shop is heated and air conditioned.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We currently have about 24 technicians and 43 service bays. The dealership is a new point for BMW that is about 4 years old and still growing.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Currently the technicians work 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. They work once every 3rd Saturday and get a weekday off when they work a Saturday.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We have all the special factory tools needed and provide one large tool chest and a rolling work cart for each technician. Our internal technicians are provided a complete tool set to complete our 168 point Hendrick vehicle inspections.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have a very modern break room with vending machines, coffee machine, ice machine, microwaves, and dishwasher.

How many bays does your shop have?

43 lifts, 2 alignment racks, and 2 state inspection bays.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Approximately 1800

What is your parts ordering process?

All parts are ordered via the functions in our DMS. Reynolds and Reynolds IGNITE.

What is your policy on side work?

All vehicles in shop require a repair order written.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We provide BMW manufacturer training, NAPA on site ASE training, and additional training from Hendrick University.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We are a growing dealership with over 100 dealers in our group. There are a lot of opportunities to grow and advance in the dealer as well as our group. We are focused on retaining and awarding our employees.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Technicians receive a performance review annually on their anniversary date. This is completed by the service manager and the shop foreman.

What type of safety training is required?

The majority of our safety training is completed on the first day with orientation. Annual training is available online and sometimes instructor led in our training room.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

All new or entry level technicians are paired with a senior technician to shadow and train with. The duration of this training is determined by the individual and their progress. The shop foreman and service manager review their progress monthly.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Currently we are building relationships with our local technical schools, colleges, and high schools.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We are partnered with UTI in Austin and Austin Community College which has an automotive program.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

In 5 years we plan to have the shop full of technicians and doing about 120 RO's per day.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

All of our applications are done via our website and submitted to our HR department. The process online does not take long at all as long as you have a current resume to upload.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

This is decided on a case by case basis. We hire a lot of employees from outside of Texas and in these cases it is always easiest to start with an initial phone interview.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

During a typical interview we go over the Hendrick group and what it is like to work here. We also will tour the facility and give an overview of our operations. Additionally all the applicants questions will be answered.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We do require a drug test along with a background check. Additional we do a personality test (MBS) to determine how you communicate with others to promote effective communication with employees and customers.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No skill assessment is required.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

In most cases we will have a decision on employment within about a weeks time.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

It all depends on the individuals situation with relocating and providing notice at their current job. We can complete the process anywhere from about 10 days and up depending on all the details.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $85,000 - $140,000/year

Salary is approximate. Hourly rate is determined by experience, training level, overall work ethic, and attitude. We are a very busy shop and pay is dependent on the efficiency and drive of the individual.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $50,000 - $90,000/year

Salary is approximate. Hourly rate is determined by experience, training level, overall work ethic, and attitude. We are a very busy shop and pay is dependent on the efficiency and drive of the individual.

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $45,000 - $70,000/year

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $31,000 - $45,000/year

Salary is approximate. Hourly rate is determined by experience, training level, overall work ethic, and attitude. We are a very busy shop and pay is dependent on the efficiency and drive of the individual.

Service Advisor
Service Advisors are primarily customer focused and, as one of the faces of the shop, they are critical in keeping customers happy. Service Advisors are frequently focused on taking customer calls, relaying information to technicians, and selling repair jobs. Both technical and sales experience are helpful for this position.
Pay Range: $65,000 - $130,000/year

Salary is approximate. Commission is determined by experience, training level, overall work ethic, and attitude. We are a very busy shop and pay is dependent on the efficiency and drive of the individual.

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $30,000 - $40,000/hour

Salary is approximate. Hourly rate is determined by experience, training level, overall work ethic, and attitude. We are a very busy shop and pay is dependent on the efficiency and drive of the individual.

Hendrick Automotive Group offers a comprehensive Dental plan for our employees and eligible dependents. The Hendrick dental plan has an "open access" feature which means you have the option to go to any dentist you choose. The plan provides for two free cleanings per year and varying percentages of coverage depending on the work that is being done (see plan coverage table below). The plan is administered by Trustmark. Retirement Plan Offered
The Hendrick Automotive Group 401(k) Plan is an easy way to save for your future. A 401(k) is an employer-sponsored retirement savings plan that allows you to make pre-tax or Roth after-tax contributions to a retirement account. Vanguard is the administrator of the Hendrick Automotive Group 401(k) Plan and thanks to their One Step feature, you don’t even have to sign up. One Step will automatically: - Enroll you in the plan after you have met the 6-month eligibility requirement and are age 21. 4% from your pay will be deducted on a pre-tax basis. - Invest your contributions in the Vanguard Institutional Target Retirement Fund, with the target date closest to the year in which you will reach age 65. - Increase your contribution rate by one percentage point each July, or whatever month you choose, to help you save more in the future. If you do not want to participate, you must contact Vanguard within 30 days of your scheduled plan entry date to prevent any payroll deductions from occurring.
Sick Leave Offered
All fulltime team members are eligible for 40 hours of paid sick time (pro-rated in first year of employment) each calendar year. Team members may use this time off for their own health condition or preventative care and may also use for an immediate family member’s (spouse, children, father, mother, brother, sister) health condition or preventative care. The Company expects all team members to act responsibly and professionally, with due regard for our business and customer needs. Therefore, to receive sick pay, a team member must personally contact his/her Manager in advance when leave is foreseeable, otherwise as soon as practicable after leave commences. Depending upon the circumstances, the Company may, at its discretion, require a doctor’s statement substantiating the absence. Unused sick time will not be paid out at the end of the calendar year, and has no cash value upon separation. A rollover of up to 20 hours into the next calendar year and the rollover amount must be used by no later than March 31. Any unused rollover amount will be removed from the Sick Time balance and has no cash value. The maximum amount of sick time available will be limited to 60 hours. Team members who move from part-time to full-time will be eligible for sick time immediately upon becoming full-time so long as the team member has completed at least 6 calendar months of continuous service.
Vacation Offered
The Company’s policy is to grant annual paid vacations to regular full-time employees. Such vacations provide the rest and relaxation important for good health and efficiency. In keeping with this policy, employees are expected to take all vacation to which their length of continuous service entitles them. Vacation pay is not provided in lieu of taking vacation time except under extraordinary conditions and with advance approval from the General Manager. Uncompensated time should not be taken prior to exhausting accrued vacation. The Company’s policy has been specifically designed to provide employees with the flexibility to take their vacation at whatever point in time is best for them and their family. While management will make every effort to give employees the vacation dates they desire, vacation schedules will be determined with due regard for the Company’s business and customer needs. In the event two or more employees in the same job classification desire the same vacation period, length of service will be the basis for the decision. Like the calendar year, the vacation year is January 1st to December 31st. The amount of vacation to which employees are entitled depends upon their length of service. First Calendar Year of Employment Pro-rated amount based on a maximum of 48 hours of vacation. (For example, a new hire starting January 1 would have 48 hours available to use upon completion of 90-days continuous full-time service. A new hire starting July 1, would have 24 hours available upon meeting the service requirement.) Paid Holidays Offered
All regular full-time employees, except for automobile sales persons, Financial Services Producers and management staff will be eligible to receive holiday pay for the holidays below. Employee will be eligible for holiday pay after 90 days of employment. New Year’s Day Thanksgiving Martin Luther King Jr. Day Christmas July 4 Floating Holiday Labor Day The Company provides eligible employees with paid holidays to allow them to relax and enjoy those occasions with friends and family. Holiday pay will be paid based on the chart below:
ST / LT Disability Offered
Hendrick Automotive Group offers short and long-term disability coverage to provide financial assistance in case you become disabled or unable to work. STD benefits provide you with income protection in the event you have an accident, injury, illness or pregnancy that prevents you from performing the duties of your occupation. STD benefits are paid at 60% of your weekly salary, up to $800 a week. The benefit is available after a 21-day elimination period and will continue during the first 90 days of injury or illness. LTD benefits provide income protection in the event you have a qualifying long-duration disability. This benefit offers financial protection to you when you need it most. The plan will also help you to return to work, if appropriate.
Life Insurance Offered
The Hendrick Automotive Group Employee Benefits Program is designed to give you peace of mind. This comes, in part, from knowing that your dependents or other loved ones will be provided for in the event of your death. For this very important reason, Hendrick Automotive Group provides Basic Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) protection to all full-time employees at no cost to you. The basic life and AD&D benefit for employees on the Foundation Plan is $20,000. In addition, all full-time employees have the option of purchasing Voluntary Life for yourself and your eligible dependents. Rates vary depending on age and the amount of coverage selected. When you complete your enrollment in Workday, your individual rates will automatically populate based on the level of coverage you select. During your initial enrollment, you can purchase up to $1,000,000 of coverage in $10,000 increments. Any amount over $500,000 will require evidence of insurability (medical questionnaire). For your spouse, you may elect up to $250,000 of coverage. Any amount over $50,000 will require evidence of insurability. You can also purchase $10,000 of coverage for your dependent children under the age of 26. During open enrollment, employees currently enrolled in the voluntary life plan with less than $500,000 worth of coverage are eligible to “buy up” or increase their current coverage by $20,000 without EOI. Employees who are not enrolled or who request more than a $20,000 increase will be asked to complete EOI. The “buy up” is not available for the Spouse and Child Voluntary plans.
Uniforms Offered
Uniforms are provided at no cost to the employee. Additionally non-slip shoes are provided every 6 months.
