Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shop is heated. The shop does have industrial-size ceiling fans, large bay doors and other fans for cooling during the warmer months.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We have five locations, and we all work together as a team helping each other as needed. The entire team you can get support from is over 30, but the day-to-day team you will work with is often less than five.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

The shop is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in our Valders location with a 30-minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We provide specialty tools as required by manufacturers. We also have various tools available that may be out of the scope of the hand tools technicians are required to have. We expect our techs to invest in their caries and provide a basic mechanical tool set. Many specialty tools will be provided. We also offer an annual tool allowance.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have an air-conditioned break room with a TV, microwave, toaster oven, pizza oven, refrigerator and freezer.

How many bays does your shop have?

There are three workstations in the mobility bay, one in the detail bay and roughly six workstations in the body shop/paint shop (not all are used simultaneously).

How many repair orders do you average per month?

The number of repairs varies from month to month, but it is often between 50 and 100.

What is your parts ordering process?

Technicians connect directly with organizations that we have relationships. The parts are often delivered or sometimes picked up for the technician by other staff.

What is your policy on side work?

Side work is acceptable if it is not in a competing space.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Listening to music, podcasts, audiobooks is acceptable as you work, as long as no cords jeopardize safety. We often have meals available during some times of the year, and we are a family-owned company, so we like to eat.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Absolutely. We pride our company in having highly factory-trained expert technicians. We help our technicians get the education they need, maintain that education and then advance their education above what is required.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

As technicians' skills grow, they can advance based on their ability and motivation. Since we are a family-owned company, we can work with a technician's goals and develop a path that advances our employees and the company as a whole. Our goal is to coach up our employees to perform at their maximum potential. For example, if you come in as a C level tech, we would like to raise you to a B level tech and eventually and A level tech as your skills advance.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We have a yearly performance review; however, supervisors regularly communicate with members of their team, so nothing is a surprise when the performance review comes up.

What type of safety training is required?

Safety is our top priority. Safety training for the facility and mobility products is provided as needed.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We have five locations, and all techs work as a team. If a vehicle comes into a location that the technician is unfamiliar with, others are a phone call away if help is unavailable. We even will have experienced techs travel to other locations as necessary for assistance/training from time to time. As a family-owned company, the environment fosters natural and formal mentorship. Senior technicians work with B and C level techs to grow their skill set in diagnosing and repair.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We are very involved with the community; we donate time and money to adaptive sports programs such as wheelchair basketball, adaptive baseball, hunting, fishing, trapshooting, and much more. We will sometimes paint accessible spaces participate in biking events and walks to support ALS and other conditions our products help.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We fully support the intern process and regularly employ interns at our headquarters in Valders, WI.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We are expanding; we are not a company that rests on our success. We will continue to grow as the most prominent family-owned mobility vehicle dealer in Wisconsin.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

We are a family-owned company and company that is a family. Our president's door is open, and you can bring ideas and concerns to him and your supervisor. Ideas, solutions and improvements are always welcome to be heard by management.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Often we communicate with applicants over the phone first.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

In-person interviews entail talking with the direct supervisor and then the company owner. Often you will have a chance to meet with one of your potential colleagues as well.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We run background checks and a personality test for some positions.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

Skill assessments are based on the position if applicable.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

After the final interview, responding to the applicant takes a few business days or less. If the candidate is exceptional, we will often make an offer on the spot.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

We respond to qualified candidates the next business day. The hiring time-line is varies depending on position. We try to make the process as efficient as possible with regular communication throughout the hiring process.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

We have a process for hiring potential team members, but we will do our best to accommodate if an applicant needs reasonable accommodation.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $52,000 - $56,000/year ($25.00 - $26.92/hr)

Technicians are paid at an hourly basis at 40 hours a week. Overtime is at 1.5x hourly rate. The hourly approach allows us to focus on quality rather than putting pressure on techs to turn out hours.

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $41,600 - $52,000/year ($20.00 - $25.00/hr)

Technicians are paid at an hourly basis at 40 hours a week. Overtime is at 1.5x hourly rate. The hourly approach allows us to focus on quality rather than putting pressure on techs to turn out hours.

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $37,400 - $41,600/year ($17.98 - $20.00/hr)

Technicians are paid at an hourly basis at 40 hours a week. Overtime is at 1.5x hourly rate. The hourly approach allows us to focus on quality rather than putting pressure on techs to turn out hours.

Auto Detailer Pay Range: $12 - $13/hour

This position is full or part-time with flexible hours.

Automotive Location Manager Pay Range: $60,000 - $100,000/year

This position includes a commission pay based on both retail and service sales

Auto Mechanic Trainer/Team Leader Pay Range: $46,000 - $54,000/year

A&J offers a $15,000 term life insurance policy to all regular, full-time employees. The company pays 65% of the monthly premium.
Uniforms Offered
A&J covers 50% of the company uniform.
Other Offered
A&J offers an annual Tool & Boot allowance. Amount is discretionary based on company performance.
