Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shop is heated. It is not air conditioned, however there are multiple bay doors that can be opened and numerous "big ass fans" throughout the shop for great air flow.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We currently have 11 flat-rate technicians, 2 express technicians, and 5 advisors. As we continue to grow, we will be splitting the shop into three teams of 5-6 techs and 2 advisors.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

We're open from 7:30am-6pm. Technician shift is from 8am-5pm and every 3rd Saturday from 8am-4pm. Hourly technicians and advisors get one day off during the week of their Saturday. As we continue to grow and split into teams, we will be moving to a "4 10's" shift schedule.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Starter set provided for express technicians. Set becomes their own to keep at 1 year of employment. Annual tool stipend for $1000 for all technicians. 2 new Hunter alignment racks installed in 2021 Hunter road force balancer VW special tools

What type of break room facility is provided?

Large breakroom with big screen tv, fridge/freezer, microwaves, and toaster. Locker room with individual lockers. Future plans to combine breakroom and locker room into mini NFL locker room style space.

How many bays does your shop have?

30, including 2 alignment racks.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

1200+. For this year our appointments have been scheduled out approximately 3-4 weeks consistently.

What is your parts ordering process?

We stock many popular OEM parts in-house. If not in stock, special order as needed.

What is your policy on side work?

Strictly prohibited.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We provide toolboxes and workbenches to all technicians.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We have a corporate training for basics/intro level technician training, as well as getting comfortable with Xtime inspection tool and media usage for inspections. We also pay for technicians to go to manufacturer training and get certified in all the necessary skills all the way up to Master level. Continued education via online and classroom training. We also have tuition reimbursement plans for courses taken while employed.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

There are advancement opportunities available both at our location as well as in our entire organization.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We have an initial 60 day review as well as annual reviews unless it is required to have more at other intervals.

What type of safety training is required?

There are corporate level interactive video trainings and any required manufacturer training courses.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Our tenured technicians do a great job of mentoring and teaching new technicians

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Tom Wood is very involved in the community. We are the main sponsor for the automotive education at Ivy Tech Community College. We have an annual golf outing for the American Cancer Society. We have a toy drive for YMCA each year. We are also involved with Lincoln Tech, Wyotech, and J Everett Light Career Center.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Our corporate trainer recently recruited a few people from J Everett Light Career Center, which is a local high school level career center. We also invest in and recruit from Lincoln Tech and Ivy Tech locally, as well as Wyotech nationally.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes, we screen applications and resumes to check employment history, experience, etc.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Usually the first interview is one-on-one with the service manager. For some positions, we will have a second interview or bring the GM in for the interview.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes

Typically 3-5 business days

Approximately 1-2 weeks.

A Level Technician Pay Range: $100,000.00 - $150,000.00/year

Productivity bonus based on media usage and hours turned for the pay period

B Level Technician Pay Range: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00/year

Productivity bonus based on media usage and hours turned for the pay period

C Level Technician Pay Range: $50,000.00 - $70,000.00/year

Productivity bonus based on media usage and hours turned for the pay period

Service Advisor Pay Range: $65,000.00 - $130,000.00/year

Base of $25,000 Commission based on tech hours sold Bonus paid every paycheck based on variety of incentives.

Lube Technician Pay Range: $20.00 - $22.00/hour

Productivity bonus based on media usage and hours turned for the pay period

We have an excellent medical insurance package on the first of the month after 60 days of employment. Employees also have options for spouses and families.

Dental insurance is available on the first of the month after 60 days of employment. Employees also have options for spouses and families.

Vision insurance is available on the first of the month after 60 days of employment. Employees also have options for spouses and families.
Retirement Plan Offered
401K option is available for employees that are eligible based on age restrictions on the first of the month after 90 days of employment. Employer match of 25% of the first 6% saved. Fully vested after 6 years.
Sick Leave Offered
3 days PTO after 90 days of employment. Renews annually.
Vacation Offered
1 week vacation after 1 year of employment. 2 weeks at 2 years of employment. 3 weeks at 5 years of employment.
Paid Holidays Offered
We offer paid holidays starting immediately on hire date. All major national holidays.
ST / LT Disability Offered
We offer short term disability on the first of the month after 60 days of employment.
Life Insurance Offered
Tom Wood pays for employee life insurance of $10,000 on the first of the month after 60 days of employment. Employees have the option to purchase an increased amount of their own, or purchase for spouse, as well as dependents.
Uniforms Offered
Company provides uniforms for technicians.
Other Offered
Tuition reimbursement is available on a case-by-case basis.
