Under The Hood
Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?
The Shop is fully heated with in floor and traditional heating. We have both A/C and fans to help keep the shop cool. Lastly, we have Horman quick garage doors to keep the Heat/A/C from escaping, keeping it cooler/warmer in the shop.
What is the size of the team I’d be working with?
Our Service and parts team consists of around 180 people. With the sales team our facility has roughly 220 people working at it.
What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?
We are open 7:00 am - 6:00 pm Monday - Friday. We are also open on Saturdays from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. The majority of our shifts are from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. We are flexible and can make adjustments when needed. The Saturday rotation is every 6th Saturday and you are also offered a comp day during the week. If you choose to not take it, we will also pay overtime for that Saturday.
What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?
We provide all necessary Ford-specific tools. We have BG equipment for Flushes. We have several A/C machines. Shop supplies vending machines through Wurth. We provide safety glasses and Latex/Nitrite gloves. We even have a small tractor to help push vehicles in when needed!
What type of break room facility is provided?
We have a fairly large break room with several tables, 2 refrigerators, a coffee machine and TV. We also have access to several vending machines and one with access to more meal-based food and not just snacks. We are walking distance from a Wahlburgers, Starbucks, Dairy Queen and a Chicken Max. There are also many restaurants that are very close and easily accessible, so you have many options as to how you like to take your breaks/lunchs.
How many bays does your shop have?
We have a total of 37 bays onsite and 3 bays offsite at our reconditioning center. We also have two alignment racks, two flat stalls, a mobile 4 post, 4 mobile vans and Quick Lane with 4 pit stalls.
How many repair orders do you average per month?
We average roughly 5,000 repair orders a month with our Main shop, mobile team, Quick Lane and reconditioning center. The main shop alone averages 2,400 repair orders a month.
What is your parts ordering process?
This varies depending on the repair. We have a huge inventory of parts and have a 90% same-day fill rate on parts. Whenever possible, we order parts during the appointment process, otherwise, our technician requests parts via Tekion (Our DMS) or directly from a parts person. We even have 3 dedicated parts people who work right in the shop with you and are very accessible to help make sure that you are getting the right parts!
What is your policy on side work?
You are able to work on your own vehicle or a family/friends vehicle when you are not on your shift.
Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?
4 Mobile Service Vans are out diagnosing the vehicle before it comes into the shop for repair. 3 dedicated in shop parts people. We like to do frequent out of work events, typically every 2-3 months. This may consist of Axe throwing, Go Karts, Shooting, Dave and buster, etc. We also like to grill occasionally in the summer for either lunch or dinner right outside the shop. A monthly all tech meeting where food is provided. We like to switch it up and not just do pizza every time. We do anything from burgers to BBQ and will cater in the food. Lunch is provided on Saturdays. Over time is paid on Saturdays, this applies to flat rate technicians as well!
Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?
We provide the opportunity to be involved in any Ford training that you are interested in. If your goal is to be a senior master technician, we will do our best to support you in getting all of the training you need.
Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?
Our goal is to promote from within whenever possible. We have advanced several technicians from our Quick Lane to our training bays. After they were ready and an opening was available we partnered them with someone in the shop. We determine who is best for them to partner with based on the work that they are interested in (Electrical, suspension, engine, transmission, and Diesel). Once they can comfortably diagnose common to semi-common concerns and perform 90% of the work on their own, we advance them to a D-level technician. From there it depends on training, variety of work, attitude and performance to advance to C, B and A.
Can you describe your performance review process?
A minimum of once a year, our shop foreman and service manager like to sit down and to discuss performance. We discuss attendance, following process, inspection/media usage, proficiency, training, teamwork, and attitude. We like to provide constructive support in getting our technicians to the next level. We also like to hear any feedback as to what we can do better for our technicians and the shop. Beyond this, our shop foreman Dale is very active with the shop and meets with team members almost daily to see where our team needs help.
What type of safety training is required?
There is no prior safety training that is required. Any training can either be done or provided here.
Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?
They will work side by side to help with small and big issues. When they partner up with a technician, they will be in the bay closest to them. We also have dedicated special matter experts who can help with the more difficult issues. Lastly, our foreman is very active and available to help when needed.
How does your shop get involved with the local community?
Community involvement is one of our Core Values. Several times a year we do events and donations. This can be anywhere from United Way to providing help to individuals. On Fridays, we wear a T-shirt branded with which organization we are currently donating to. We do this to raise awareness and get as much involvement as possible. We will have volunteers sign up to go to local places like day cares, hospitals, grocery stores, etc. and see if they can find anyone in need of help and provide financial support for what we can.
Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?
We are involved in a few local High schools and even donated a transit to one of them. We have a good relationship with our local tech schools and frequently visit them and provide tours of our shop. We also do paid internships for individuals in our local tech schools. Lastly, we do go to several UTIs around the country and try to further support individuals who are interested in this industry. Several of our technicians are not originally from South Dakota and had moved here after meeting with us at a UTI campus.
Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?
We typically only do a phone screening/preliminary interview if you do not live locally.
What do your in-person interviews entail?
We like to get to know you. Your work history is on your resume but your interests, hobbies, goals and values typically are not. Our culture here is the most important thing and want to make sure that anyone that we may be hiring share similar values.
Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?
We do both a background test and a personality test.
Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?
We do depending on what level roll you are applying for. This is typically going to consist of reviewing previous training/certifications that you have obtained.
After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?
This can vary depending on the position and the individual that we interview. If we think you are a perfect fit, we may offer a position during the interview or later the same day. If we have several interviews set up for the position that is being applied to, this could be a few weeks before you hear back. We like to give everyone equal opportunity to meet with us before making a decision.
Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?
This is usually dependent upon who we are hiring. We can usually get the entire hiring process done in 2-4 days.
