Apprentice Technician

Title: Service Technician (Apprentice)

Reports to: Shop Foreman / Service Manager

Classification: Non-Exempt

 

Summary/Objective: Performs most tasks assigned with supervision required.  Requires average mechanical knowledge. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Essential Functions/Duties, include but not limited to: 

  • Performs work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with dealership and factory standards.
  • Diagnoses vehicle problems based on customer complaints and inspection.
  • Communicates with parts department to obtain needed parts.
  • Saves and tags parts of the job if under warranty or if requested by the customer.
  • Examines assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended.
  • Communicates with Service Advisor immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time.
  • Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order.
  • Road tests vehicles.
  • Participates in manufacturer-sponsored training programs, schools, and events.
  • Keeps abreast of manufacturer technical bulletins.
  • Inspects and test drives newly delivered vehicles for obvious damage and missing major components and drivability functions, while following a pre-delivery inspection check list.
  • Installs optional equipment specified by the customer or dealer.
  • Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to the Shop Foreman.
  • Ensures that customers’ cars are kept clean.   Notifies Service Advisor immediately of anything that has happened to change the appearance or condition of the vehicle.
  • Keeps shop area neat and clean.
  • Follows the Fixed Right the First Time (FRFT) philosophy. 
  • Maintains and is accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals.  Returns them to the proper place and in the same condition as they were received.
  • Understands, keeps abreast of, and complies with federal, state, and local regulations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know, Etc.
  • Operates all tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Reports any safety issues immediately to management.
  • Demonstrates behaviors consistent with the Company's Vision, Mission, and Values in all interactions with customers, co-workers and suppliers
  • Other duties may be assigned

·        Mechanical – Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

·        Engineering and Technology – Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.

·        Problem Sensitivity – The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.

·        Number Facility – The ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide quickly and correctly.

·        Valid driver’s license

Work Environment/Equipment Used: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the environment is loud.

Equipment used; most to all tools and equipment in the service shop.

 

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is regularly required to lift up to 10 pounds and up to 25 pounds. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds. The vision requirements include: close vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

 

 

Required Education / Certifications / Experience: Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school certificate, or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
