Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our shop is not heated or air-conditioned. We have 14 bay doors that remain open and four large overhead fans. This creates a lot of airflow in our shop, keeping it cooler throughout the year.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

The team will consist of 9 to 12 technicians. The shop will operate with 3 to 4 express techs, 3 to 4 Tier II (B level) technicians, and 3 to 4 Tier I (A level) technicians.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Our shop hours are from 7 AM to 6 PM. Tier I (A level) technicians work from 7 AM to 4 PM, while Tier II (B level) and Express (Lube tech) technicians work from 8 AM to 5 PM. The shop remains open until 6 PM. If a technician wishes to stay late, they are welcome to do so.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

The shop provides each technician with access to VW's extensive special tool inventory, including machines such as multiple A/C refrigerant machines, a coolant flush machine, a brake fluid flush machine, and a walnut blaster.

What type of break room facility is provided?

The dealership has two break rooms. One is a general employee break room, which includes access to a refrigerator, a microwave, and a sink. The shop break room is reserved for service employees and provides them with air conditioning, a microwave, and a fridge that is stocked with cold water and Gatorade.

How many bays does your shop have?

The shop contains 15 bays: 12 with lifts, 2 flat stalls, and 1 alignment rack.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

The average number of repair orders in the shop can range from 650 to 750, depending on the season or events held in the city.

What is your parts ordering process?

When a technician performs the digital inspection of a vehicle, they input their recommendations through xTime. At this point, the parts department will enter the parts quote. If the job is approved after the estimate is completed, the technician will receive a notification in the xTime app detailing which jobs have been approved. The technician should then go to the parts counter to check the availability of the required parts. If any parts need to be ordered, the repair order will be stamped with an "ordered" stamp, along with the estimated arrival date of the part.

What is your policy on side work?

Technicians may work on their personal vehicles after hours. However, working on customer vehicles is strictly prohibited. This violates company policy and creates a conflict of interest.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Volkswagen provides each technician with online factory training modules. Completing these modules gives technicians a basic understanding of various VW systems. Once a technician passes enough tests with a score of 80% or higher, they will become eligible to attend in-person factory training, where they can earn specific certifications.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Every technician in our shop receives the tools and support needed to advance to the next level.

Can you describe your performance review process?

The performance review process occurs quarterly. During this time, technicians receive an overview of their performance observations. They are presented with their 90-day weekly production average, and their production goals are adjusted accordingly. Additionally, technicians have the opportunity to voice any requests that may help them become more efficient and achieve their production goals.

What type of safety training is required?

Gunther provides safety training as well as shop safety best practices.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We offer an apprenticeship program that allows aspiring technicians to work with a master technician to develop specific skills that enhance their professional growth.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Currently we do not have any local involvements with the community.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Currently, we are not involved with any local schools, but we are looking to change that in the near future. We aim to establish a relationship with Spruce Creek High School and Daytona State Mechanical School.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes, I prefer talking to applicants before an in-person interview to better understand their motivations for applying and to ensure our priorities align.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

During an in-person interview, I like to discuss any certifications and qualifications the candidate may have. It’s important for me to learn more about the technician as an individual. We'll talk about past work experience and touch on what the candidate hopes to achieve with our company. I will also give the technician a tour of the shop. During this time, the applicant will be introduced to our shop foreman, who will ask a few questions of his own.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Before an applicant can be approved for hire, they must undergo a background check and pass a drug screen.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No, we do not.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

I usually contact employees about 1 to 2 business days after the interview.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

The full hiring process takes about 1.5 - 2 weeks.
