Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shops are heated, but no AC yet.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

There are around 56 team members in service department. 10 in spec shop, 15 in Ag shop, 13 in field tech positions, and 19 in the heavy shop.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Shift timeframes are Monday through Friday 7am - 3:30pm, and Monday through Thursday 11:30am - 10 PM.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Butler Machinery will provide any specialty tooling, laptop/computer software's, diagnostic tooling, pressure gauges, and anything over half inch drive sockets.

What type of break room facility is provided?

A large breakroom with 2 microwaves, a full size fridge, and a wide open space with many tables and chairs are available for employee use on breaks. There is also a small store with frozen meals, snacks, and a wide variety of beverages available for purchase should employees forget their lunch or need an extra snack.

How many bays does your shop have?

There are 24 bays throughout the different shops.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Average repair orders could be anywhere from 300-450 per month, depending on the amount of rebuild jobs they have going on at the time.

What is your parts ordering process?

On the technician side, techs will order parts needed for repair orders through their work computer. Parts department will then deliver the parts requested to the technician's bay or to a BIN location if the technician is working offsite.

What is your policy on side work?

Side work is okay as long as it is not affecting your role with Butler Machinery or taking business from Butler Machinery.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

There are overhead cranes in almost every bay. The variety of industry in the area is very appealing to some - EPG, Ag, construction, oil and gas, and the coal mines.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Butler Machinery Company has a dedicated Training facility covering heavy equipment, agricultural equipment, and basic fundamental trainings. Sullair and powergen equipment Also have the opportunities to go to trainings out of state. Large mining equipment trainings are done in Tinaja, AZ at CAT Demonstration and Learning Center.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Butler Machinery Company offers many opportunities for career growth on the technician level. A technician may ask for a classification review to move up a level depending on their job performance, efficiency, and interpersonal skills. There are opportunities available for career growth in other areas as well that include management, sales, and aftermarket operations.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Requesting a classification review involves meeting with your manager to go over key performance indicators like efficiency, and improvement and retention of knowledge. Upward movement in Classifications is encouraged, gauged and implemented by both technician and manager.

What type of safety training is required?

Mine Safety Training is required for those technicians working on or around mine sites. Monthly safety videos and quizzes are required by all employees to ensure and reiterate basic safety concepts are on front of mind. Safety is one of Butler Machinery's key values and is taken seriously.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Experienced technicians with Butler Machinery often dedicate a significant amount of time mentoring younger or less experienced team members. These mentors participate in internal leadership training to develop the skills and techniques needed to effectively guide and support others.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Butler Machinery partners with Pride INC out of Bismarck to offer employment to individuals with intellectual disabilities. These individuals put together the oil sample kits that are sold to customers. Butler Machinery is also a supporter of the Girl and Boy Scouts of America by participating in various events throughout the year. A pancake breakfast is thrown every year to thank our customers and communities for their continued support throughout the year. Other volunteer opportunities are also available to participate in throughout the year whether that be a monetary donation, time donation, or supply donation to organizations throughout the community.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Butler Machinery works closely with local high schools to encourage students to enter into the diesel industry. The company ensures the Workforce Development Specialists also present on future education opportunities following high school and internship opportunities within the company after completion of tech school.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes we do. After applying with us, qualified applicants will be sent a link to their email to pick a time that works best of them for a phone pre-screen. After a successful phone screen, applicants will be sent a link to do an online aptitude test to see how their mind works in real life mechanical scenarios.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Our in-person interviews begin with a standard question-and-answer session, allowing us to learn more about you while giving you the opportunity to learn about our company and culture. After that, we'll conduct a mechanical aptitude test to assess your mechanical skills and problem solving abilities.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Once an offer is made, the candidate will need to successfully complete a drug screening and a motor vehicle history check to ensure they meet our insurability requirements.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We perform both an online and in-person skill assessment.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

While we make every effort to respond to applicants promptly with either an offer or a rejection, the timeline may vary. Depending on the Service Manager's workload and schedule, it could take anywhere from a few days to up to a week after the in-person interview.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

The full hiring process may take 1-3 weeks depending on the schedules of both the applicant and the Service Manager.

In addition, on the last day of the pay period following the successful completion of your 60 working day evaluation, 32 hours will be added to your PTO bank.
