What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Schedules vary.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Full-Sized tool boxes are provided for each technician. Specialty and shop tools are available in the shop tool room. Small VW specialty tools are available in the parts department.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Team members are invited to enjoy their lunch, a snack, or a break at Bill’s Bistro – a cashless self-service micro-market located on the second floor of the building.

How many bays does your shop have?

The Main service facility has 10 bays and an alignment rack. The satellite facility has an additional 5 bays.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

900 - 1,000 per month.

What is your parts ordering process?

We have a large inventory of parts. Any parts that are not in stock can be obtained from our dedicated warehouse located in Wisconsin. Our team exhausts all avenues to get the part here the fastest way possible regardless of expense based on client and tech schedule  Local Dealer  Warehouse  Overnight There is a dedicated parts distribution center locally. Ordered parts arrive next day.

What is your policy on side work?

Technicians can work on their vehicles and those of immediate family members outside of their normal working hours.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Technicians participate in online training through Volkswagen Academy and are regularly sent to onsite training at the Volkswagen training center in Elk Grove Village.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Team members have multiple career path opportunities and we love promoting from within! Anyone seeking to advance within the company can simply express their interest to their supervisor or our HR department for guidance.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Bill Jacobs reviews monthly total booked hours and hours per RO with technicians and advisors monthly.

What type of safety training is required?

Team member safety is a continual focus addressed at shop meetings. The company's vendor provides online safety training and onsite training four times per year.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Our team of experienced technicians are dedicated to assisting apprentice technicians in achieving journeyman status. A Shop Foreman is assigned 2 to 3 newer technicians to mentor and train. Additionally, the seasoned technicians are paid extra "help time" to help educate and motivate the newer technicians.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Bill Jacobs Partners Matching Gifts Program matches colleagues’ donations to eligible 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that meets program criteria. Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We have partnered with Universal Technical Institute in Lisle to provide tuition reimbursement, tool vouchers, relocation assistance, and more to technicians entering the field. We have partnered with the Carl Schurz High School automotive program and look forward to growing more partnerships.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

The plan is to increase shop capacity by 32% and increase our total technician team members from 13 to 17.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Applications are submitted online and take 5 to 15 minutes to complete on average, depending on whether the candidate has a resume to upload.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

No.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Our interviews are conducted in person with the Service Manager and the General Manager. During the interview, candidates will be asked about their training, work experience, repair and diagnostic skills, and career aspirations. Candidates are also provided an opportunity to ask questions about the position and company.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We perform: An insurability assessment; A felony criminal background check; Post-Offer Drug Screening (We do not test for marijuana) The Company uses a communications and career development tool called the ProScan Survey.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $42.00 - $47.00/hour

o $42.75 per booked hour o Incentive Pay up to $47.25 @ 65+ Hours o 35-Hour Weekly Guarantee o $1.50 Saturday Shift Premium

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $22.00 - $31.00/hour

o Starting rate: $21.00 per clocked hour o End Rate $31.00 per booked hour & weekly guarantee of 35 hours

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $17.00 - $21.00/hour
