Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?
The Service shop is heated, not air conditioned.
What is the size of the team I’d be working with?
We have a lateral support system in place which has 1 Group Leader and no more than 4 Technicians in one group.
What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?
We have two shifts available: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:30pm or Tuesday - Saturday 8:00am - 5:30pm Tues.-Fri., 8:00am - 3:00pm Sat.
What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?
We have an inventoried tool room that has all the GM required special tools. We also have a program in place for Technician owned laptop and MDI2.
What type of break room facility is provided?
Break room has refrigerator, microwave, and TV.
How many bays does your shop have?
There are 23 bays in the Service shop, with one bay dedicated per technician.
How many repair orders do you average per month?
We average 579 customer pay repair orders a month with 3.31 hours per repair order.
What is your parts ordering process?
The Technician uses the Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection through our DMS to build the estimate, from there the estimate is sent to the Parts department and the Service Advisor. Once the job is approved by the customer, the parts are delivered to the Technicians bay.
What is your policy on side work?
No side work is allowed. Every vehicle worked on must have a repair order before it is brought into the shop. Employee vehicle repairs are done at a discounted rate.
Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?
Along with the Group Leaders, we have a Shop Foreman in place to assist with Technician needs as well.
Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?
Thompson Automotive Inc. requires GM training to be completed, which consist of GM web-based, virtual, and hands-on training. Technicians are paid for training and are also reimbursed for all passing ASE courses.
Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?
There are several opportunities to grow within the company. We prefer to promote within and we can offer training to promote your career path.
Can you describe your performance review process?
We have a Performance Objective report that is updated daily. Technicians are able to work with their Group Leader, Shop Foreman and/or Service Manager on a daily basis to ensure performance objectives are being met.
What type of safety training is required?
Technicians follow the safety guidelines as stated in GM Service Information.
Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?
We have several GM Master Techs with many years of experience that are always willing to help guide younger Technicians on a path to be successful.
How does your shop get involved with the local community?
Thompson Automotive Inc. has been in business for over 67 years and is involved in multiple groups within the community.
Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?
Thompson Automotive Inc. is on the GM Automotive Service Education Program (ASEP) committee and works with the ASEP automotive instructor at Wake Tech Community College.
Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?
We can do a phone screening, however it is not necessary before doing an in-person interview.
What do your in-person interviews entail?
We like to get to know the applicant. We talk about their automotive knowledge and where they would like to see their career in the future as well as what they are looking for in a company.
Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?
We do require a background check and drug screening before employment.
Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?
We do not perform any skill assessments before hiring.
After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?
Notification is given within 2 days
Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?
Submitted applications are reviewed daily and once the applicant has been contacted and the interview is completed, usually 2 days.
