Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Yes, the shop his heated. No, there is no A/C.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We have 5 Diesel Technicians, 2 Service Advisors, a Working Foreman, and a Service Manager.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

The shop is open Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Saturdays. First shift is 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. 2nd shift is 10:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We provide all specialty tools. There are (PACCAR) MX mandated shop tools for diagnostics. All of your specialty testing tools are provided for all of our Techs. There's also large socket sets and impacts. We have an electric (remote) sliding overhead crane, small truck jacks, two sets of wheel lifts, multiple Transmission jacks, clutch jacks, hub jacks, brake drum jacks - anything to lift anything! If you don't want to lift it we have a thing for that! :)

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have a break room for all employees at the dealership. It has a table, refrigerator, microwave, pizza pizzaz, sink, and toaster.

How many bays does your shop have?

12 (one of them is a wash/dual purpose bay)

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Depending on the month, it can range from 100 - 125 ROs.

What is your parts ordering process?

All parts orders are processed through Decisiv, which is PACCAR's dealer operating software. They're all done on a computer - no manual orders on a piece of paper.

What is your policy on side work?

We do not allow "moonlighting" where a Tech can work on class 5 - class 8 commercial trucks either out of their home or at a business. That is a policy that is strictly enforced.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We have an "energetic" staff at our shop. Since it's a smaller team, everyone looks out for each other. It's a close team.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Every Diesel Tech has an 8 month Tech Development Plan. The Service Manager creates an 8 month online and instructor led training development plan that, if the Tech completes all of the training outlined in the Tech Development Plan within the allotted time frame, they will receive the raise that was listed at the bottom of the Tech Development Plan. JX has several in-house Service Trainers - one that is certified by PACCAR to award a couple of certificates if the Diesel Tech takes, and passes, that PACCAR class. The JX in-house Service Trainers teach approximately 15 courses (e.g. A/C, Brakes, Chassis, Driveline, Electrical, Suspension, and more). Diesel Techs also have the ability to get paid up to 5 hours a week of online (at home) OEM training through OEMs like Allison, Bendix, Caterpillar, Cummins, Eaton, Meritor, PACCAR, and a few more. If the Tech physically worked 40 hours that week, the at home online training is then considered overtime (time and a half).

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We have different levels for our Diesel Technicians: - J1 (entry level, possibly no experience, maybe they just graduated from Tech school or community college, no certifications) - J2 (may have a few years of experience, may have a few certifications) - J3 (more experience, more certifications) - J4 (even more experience, ideally they're PACCAR MX certified or Cummins certified) - J5/Journeyman (fully PACCAR MX and Cummins certified, also responsible for training new/entry level Technicians) We have three levels of Foreman: - Foreman - Shop Foreman - Working Foreman We also have Service Advisors. At any time, based on their experience/skill set, and customer service skills, a Diesel Tech could be promoted to any of the level Foreman or become a Service Advisor. Then, there are Assistant Service Managers, Service Managers, Regional Service Managers, Assistant Operations Managers, Operations Managers, and Regional Vice President. There's also the ability to become an In-House Service Trainer or a Recruiter, if there is an opening.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Diesel Techs have the ability to earn two raises every year (annually in June and from their 8 month Tech Development Plan). The June review time period is when the entire company is evaluated for a potential raise. There are quarterly,15 minute "check-ins" with Service department staff (that are not tied to raises) just to see how everyone is doing.

What type of safety training is required?

There is a quarterly video based training, which comes from our Safety/EHS department. The Safety team comes to each dealership at least once a year to do a safety check. Essentially, they pretend like they're OSHA so we can ensure the highest level of safety at each of our locations. We take safety very seriously at JX!

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

If you come in as a Shop Helper, you're doing anything that needs done in the department. That being said, everyone helps you. Techs will stop what they're doing to help you out since we're a close team. We're only as strong as our weakest team member. Senior techs enjoy mentoring the future generation of techs. They get a sense of pride out of it.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We have an internal charity called the JX Gives Back Family Foundation, which is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit. Our employees can donate money (via payroll deduction) to the JXGBFF and all of the money donated goes into a pool. Any JX Employee, and the public, can fill out a form to request that money be donated to a 501(c)3 charity. Every month, our JXGBFF committee meets and vets each of the submissions. Our President matches our employee's donation dollar for dollar up to $10,000/month. If you have a charity that is near and dear to your heart, you may submit a request and if the committee selects your charity, they will receive a check and you may be asked to deliver the check to the charity. Additionally, every FT employee earns 8 hours of Volunteer Time Off (VTO) to be used every year. This allows employees to donate their time, which they're paid for, to help out a 501(c)3 nonprofit. They may stay at one place all day long (8 hours) or they may visit one charity for 4 hours and then go to another charity for 4 hours. It's use it or lose it so the 8 hours can not be banked up from year to year.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Yes, we have a high school recruiter (Career Placement Specialist) that attends high school events (career fairs, high school showcases, mock interviews, recruiting presentations, etc.) throughout the year. Since we're in 4 states and there are hundreds of high schools, we don't get to all of them, but we're very active in the high schools. We have four recruiters that are involved in the same events as our high school recruiter, but they're going to community colleges, Tech schools, 4 year universities, workforce development career fairs, and other recruiting opportunities. We recruit at dozens of local community colleges and tech schools as well as the "Big 3" - Lincoln Tech, Universal Technical Institute, and WyoTech.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

Annually, since 2018, an organization called "Women In Trucking" have awarded companies in the Transportation industry with a prestigious award: Top Company For Women To Work In Transportation. The public votes and approximately 15-20 companies win this award every year. JX is proud to say that we have won it 7 straight years (2018 - 2024). Approximately 9-10% of our employees are women and they hold jobs in every department in our company, with many in management and leadership positions. In the near future, we will be a third generation FEMALE owned company.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

It depends on a couple of factors. Many times the Service Manager would like our in house recruiter to conduct a phone interview first to see if the candidate is worth an in person interview. Other times, depending on the experience, certifications, qualifications, and previous jobs the candidate has worked at, the Service Manager will skip the phone interview and go straight into an in person interview.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

There is typically only one interview with our Service Manager and either our Regional Service Manager or our Operations Manager for the region. If those managers need another opinion, there may be a second interview with our Regional Vice President, but that doesn't happen very often. The interview typically lasts about an hour or so.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

After a candidate verbally accepts our offer, we collect/confirm personal and contact information before kicking off background checks and drug screens. We don't do assessments for hourly Diesel Tech candidates; only salaried candidates (e.g. Service Advisors, Service Managers, etc.)

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We do not for Diesel Techs. We have all salaried candidates (e.g. Service Advisors, Service Managers, etc.) take a Berke Assessment before we can offer them the position. There are 9 sections and it typically takes about 50-60 minutes to complete. Surprisingly, according to many candidates that we have asked that have taken it, it's very accurate.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

It could be a couple of hours for a rejection or up to a week or two for an offer. It all depends on how many candidates have applied, when each candidate is free for an interview, when our managers are free to interview (sometimes they're out sick, on vacation, or they're not properly staffed due to members of their team being out sick, on vacation, or at training).

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

It will probably take 2-3 weeks, again, depending on multiple factors that were mentioned above. We don't like to wait around as time kills all (or most) deals. :)

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

If you're not sure where you stand, please contact the Service Manager or the in house recruiter and ask for an update on your application. As always, be polite and professional in your communication.

Diesel Mechanic / Service Technician Pay Range: $22.00 - $35.00/hour
