Under The Hood
Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?
Our shop does not have A/C. We are oriented north and south so we get great airflow and we have a BigAss fan as well as individual fans.
What is the size of the team I’d be working with?
We have four Service consultants, nine main shop technicians, four express technicians, dispatcher/ internal writer, service and parts manager as well as drive manager and shop foreman.
What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?
Technician shifts are either 7a-5p or 8a-6p Our hours of service and parts operation are: Monday through Friday 7a-6p Saturday 7:30a-3:30p Sunday closed
What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?
Each technician is issued their own laptop scan tool. We have all required Volkswagen special tools, many that are optional tools. We have three 1234 a/c machines and two 134a machines, hunter road force tire balancer, two on car brake lathes, transmission jack, and a variety of smaller tools like grinder, vices, etc.
What type of break room facility is provided?
We are currently under construction which includes a new technician break-room with all the amenities.
How many bays does your shop have?
Our shop will have 18 bays with lifts and several flat stalls in addition to the wash rack.
How many repair orders do you average per month?
On average 1200 ROs a month
What is your parts ordering process?
We have an in house communication tool called Workflow360. All main shop technicians utilize this tool and keep track of their communications with parts, service consultants, managers, and others in the dealership. You order your parts through Workflow360 and the parts department communicates and brings the part directly to the technician.
What is your policy on side work?
We do allow side work on vehicles that live in the Technician's same household. Other requests are handled on a case-by-case basis and should be discussed with the Service Manager prior to any work being started.
Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?
We offer all kinds of training. We have Web based training, instructor led training, self study programs, mentoring, and hands on the job training. We believe everyone should take an instructor led training course from Volkswagen in their academy at least once a year including our Master Technicians. That way we all stay current.
Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?
Many of our technicians started as porters, moved through the highly process driven service express department and grew to highly productive (and highly paid) full line technicians. This happens in tandem with all types of training and mentoring. We believe in promoting our good people and our leadership team (Drive manager. Dispatcher, and our shop foreman) has all been promoted from our ranks.
Can you describe your performance review process?
We are currently formalizing our review process. Since we are a mid sized shop it is easier for our service manager, shop foreman and dispatcher to be out in the shop regularly.
What type of safety training is required?
We have an in depth safety training program through a third party, KPA. The required safety training is dependent and tailored to the position the employee is hired for and includes necessary certifications such as A/C 609.
Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?
Our whole shop helps everyone... we share ideas and experience. Our mentoring experienced and Master technicians are paid based on their production and the production of the technician they are mentoring. It is in everyone's best interest to bring the mentored technician up to speed and productive so everyone wins.
How does your shop get involved with the local community?
The Hewlett Dealerships are very involved locally, sponsoring community events like Georgetown's Red Poppy Festival. We also are involved with organizations that assist with those affected by a cancer diagnosis i.e., Flatwater Foundation and we help fund programs for the most vulnerable children in our community through the Helping Hand Home, CASA of Williamson County and the Children's Advocacy Center, to name just a few. Our employees also pull together when needed to help each other through tough times, we collect food for the local food banks, raise money for local animal shelters and more. And we have tangential involvement with a local Air-Cooled VW club.
Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?
We have donated some of the equipment we replace to the Georgetown High School automotive program. It's important to educate and mentor the youth in our community. Our dealership group sponsors the Auto Tech programs at the local schools. We sponsor and judge the local high school's Texas Shoot Out competition, and we're often invited to speak at the career fairs at local high schools and vocational schools, talking with the students about careers in the automotive business.
Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?
We can and will do phone interviews depending upon the location of the applicant. We do prefer in person interviews.
What do your in-person interviews entail?
We ask each applicant to allow as much as two hours for a complete interview. This interview will consist of talking with several people, including the Service Manager, two shop foremen, and the dispatcher-production Manager. We feel this gives enough time for the Dealership and the applicant to determine if it is a good fit for all involved.
Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?
All applicants must demonstrate ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen. Personality is assessed at time of interview.
Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?
The skill assessment takes place during the interview. This is based on years of being in the industry, level of experience, dealership or aftermarket training, etc.
After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?
This is on a case by case basis depending upon how many positions we may be needing to fill. In some instances, an offer will be given the day of the face-to-face interview. If an offer is not extended at the time of the interview, you can expect to hear from someone within three to five days at most.
Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?
In most case five days or less.
