Under The Hood
Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?
It is San Diego. We have never needed heat in our shop. We do not currently have air conditioning, but plan to add it by the summer of 2025. Very few days it is that hot, but we do have a few days. Overall, weather is very temperate.
What is the size of the team I’d be working with?
Our shop has 35 main shop techs and 2 recon techs. We currently have two empty bays. We are looking for main shop techs, so you would be joining a large team. We separate this out into 4 teams with team leaders and we have two non-working shop foremen. There are layers of support
What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?
Shop is open 7-6 M-F and 8-4 on Saturday. We have a dedicated Saturday team, so often they work Saturdays and other techs work M-F. Can pick a base schedule for your shift at 7-4,8-5, or 9-6. Some new techs start on Saturday, so we do ask for that flexibility
What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?
We provide shop tools and equipment that an individual cannot effectively purchase...shop tools, various machines, etc.. For all smaller hand tools or frequent use tools, we do expect the technicians to provide their own.
What type of break room facility is provided?
Full Break Room with some food for purchase, four fridges, microwaves, etc...
How many bays does your shop have?
38 plus 2 alignment and 4 EV bays
How many repair orders do you average per month?
Around 1,200-1,400 RO's per month
What is your parts ordering process?
We have a parts department. Tech requests part in Mykaarma or in person, and parts handles from there and tells them when it shows up.
What is your policy on side work?
We do not permit our technicians to do side work.
Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?
High ceilings, wide aisles. Each tech gets one bay, but you can easily park another car behind your bay in most cases. Biggest, most central dealership for Audi in San Diego.
Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?
Yes, we send all technicians to Audi factory training regularly. Initially training towards advanced certification, and also some new model training.
Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?
Technicians can increase in certification. They can grow to become team leads. The team leads can become foreman. The foreman can become managers. One of our SM's right now started as a tech at another store, became team lead, foreman, and is now an Audi manager.
Can you describe your performance review process?
Twice a year, interactive, involves goal setting and a review of the year's performance.
Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?
We have a formal mentor program, and senior techs sign up and mentor younger techs. Once out of the training mentorship, the team leads and foreman take a more active role in the mentoring process.
How does your shop get involved with the local community?
We partner with the United Way, Food Bank, Dogs and Cats organizations. Holman has a "Holman Community" group where they give away a certain amount of our net profit every year.
Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?
Nothing specific, although we have done some things in the past with Miramar college.
Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?
Yes, we have a recruiter that will often do a phone screening prior to hire.
What do your in-person interviews entail?
Meeting the two Service managers and two foremen for an interview. If that goes well, you meet the GM and possibly get a shop tour.
Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?
We start with a personality test/position compatibility test prior to the interview. If selected, we would also perform a background check and drug screen.
Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?
In most cases we do not have a skills assessment, but depending on the applicant may ask technical questions during the interview.
After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?
Approximately 2 weeks depending on the position.
Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?
Typically 2-4 weeks depending on the applicant, their situation (like how fast they need it to be), etc...
These rates are per Flat-Rate Hour, although you also have an hourly guarantee. This is very negotiable depending on your experience, etc...
