Top Shop Challenge: Who has the coolest toolbox in your shop? Tell us about it. Better yet, show us some pics.
Our best toolbox goes to MARK! Mark has been a crucial part of team Wendle for 9,592 days … over 26 years! He has a large 4 section Snap-on toolbox that is about 15 years old filled with various tools, supplies, and even some refrigerated snacks. We all know a technician’s toolbox not only says a lot about who they are, but the work they do as well. Mark keeps his toolbox organized and stocked with all the right tools, which is a great reflection of his experience, success, organization, and work ethic! We appreciate all of Mark’s hard work (and cool toolbox) that has helped him meet so many of our customers’ needs over the years. Thank you for letting us showcase your kick-ass toolbox, Mark!

We're upgrading the service drive during our expansion with some state of the art technology. This is the newest piece of Hunter technology: The Hunter Quick Check Inspection. The tool automatically checks the alignment, scans the tire tread and will note measurements for each individual tire, along with wear patterns, will be hooked up to a 65" TV that will show all of the data to the incoming customer for transparency purposes, recognizes customer vehicles automatically via license plate recognition, and takes pictures of each vehicle's condition upon arrival.

Top Shop Challenge: What do you feel needs to change in order to attract more kids into our industry?
One thing that's important to remember is that the automotive industry has totally changed since a lot of the experienced technicians began their careers. It's not just the technology and machinery that has changed drastically, but the whole process of attending school and obtaining tools has gotten to be a lot bigger of an investment.

Vehicles have reached a point that kids are not getting to work on them in the garage with Dad anymore except for maybe an oil change. Sometimes Dad isn't even around. At this point I think that it is critical that they get exposure at the high school level. That's the earliest Auto Shop is offered, This being my 1st year as a teacher I've taken in anything that anyone has offered. We are currently getting ready to do a head gasket on 2006 Toyota Camry, we have re-sealed oil pans, done a ton of oil changes, brake jobs, things like that. The main problem we run into, is on a limited budget, tools and some specialty machines that it would be great to be able to familiarize the kids with.

Based on a WrenchWay poll, the majority of technicians would rather work a 4-day, 10-hour work week versus the traditional 5-day, 8-hour work week. In our latest WrenchWay Buzz, we discuss how shops that adapt to this new schedule could open up their capacity and increase their productivity.

Former european automotive technician with a speciality in BMW vehicles. Now providing 2nd level support for BMW NA and their roadside assistance program under the Master Technician Team (MTT)Whether it is a WFH or in person type role, I believe that 4-10's reign supreme over the traditional 5 8's. To put myself mentally back into the environment of having to drive to the shop and be there in person to wrench, most of my 5 8's ultimately did turn into 10 hour days, where I was simply waiting for the traffic to die down before heading home for the evening. Once you're in the zone and working, the additional two hours can come and go without even knowing it. Allowing the flexibility of the third day off allows more time to recharge which is an added bonus.

Top Shop Challenge: What do you feel needs to change in order to attract more kids into our industry?
To answer this question, we asked a couple of our younger technicians in the shop, Daniel and Josh. They think getting involved earlier could be beneficial - making sure kids know that obtaining a college degree isn’t for everyone and that there are other options out there! We need to change the perception of society (and some educators) on a technician’s career. We should normalize going into the trades and be honest … you do NOT need a college degree to make a good living. Kids should know the advantages to a trade career, especially as technicians!

Top Shop Challenge: What do you feel needs to change in order to attract more kids into our industry?
It's really important to show kids what it's actually like being in the back of the shops and the potential that stands within the automotive industry. There's a lot of troubleshooting and critical thinking involved in being an automotive technician—a good one, at least—that they don't teach you in school. Not every issue you face will be black-and-white, so it's important for young technicians to get that hands-on experience.
