Under The Hood
Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?
Yes - year round! Our shops are heated, but not air-conditioned. From spring through fall our bay doors stay open, providing an excellent flow of fresh air.
What is the size of the team Iโd be working with?
Associates at each location consist of a General Manager, Service Manager, Sales Consultant and 5-6 Auto Technicians. In addition, our Commercial & Ag Tire Technicians consider the shop home but work offsite. We also have an Apprenticeship program and have Maintenance/Cleaners who work part-time hours.
What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?
Automotive Techs work M-F, 8a-5p, with one hour for lunch. Lunch can be taken on or off site. NO WEEKENDS!
What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?
Alignment machine, presses, spring compressors, diagnostic equipment, fluid exchange machines, desktop computer. We pride ourselves on keeping state-of-the-art equipment on site.
What type of break room facility is provided?
All our service centers have a separate breakroom away from the production area.
How many bays does your shop have?
It depends on the location, but typically between 8 and 12 bays.
How many repair orders do you average per month?
Depending on the location, we average about 40 vehicles per day.
What is your parts ordering process?
All parts are ordered by the locationโs Service Leader.
What is your policy on side work?
Family is okay, but we want to avoid any conflicts of interest, such as selling services at work but doing the job personally at home.
Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?
We feature multi-level tire storage mezzanines in most locations, plus the latest state-of-the-art tire & balancer machines and aligners.
Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?
Continued technical education is included. Usually in the 1st Quarter of the year, and mostly local.
Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?
We offer a career growth path, from Lube Tech, Sales Consultant, Auto Tech, Service Manager, to General Manager.
Can you describe your performance review process?
There is a pay & performance review every 6 months.
What type of safety training is required?
Annual safety evaluations and ongoing monthly hoist inspections.
Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?
We work as a team, so all experienced techs help and mentor as needed. Youโll be learning all sorts of stuff on the job!
How does your shop get involved with the local community?
We help support local fundraising efforts via our parent company, Team Schierl Companies. This includes sponsoring local sports, donating to schools, and supporting the arts in the communities we serve.
Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?
We offer a youth apprenticeship and tech college apprenticeship, as well as tuition assistance via a partnership with Midstate Technical College and Northcentral Technical College.
Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?
Yes, we want to learn more about you and your experience and qualifications to make sure you'd be a right fit before scheduling in person interviews.
What do your in-person interviews entail?
We meet with you for about an hour or less to get to know you. Youโll interview with the General Manager or Service Manager to discuss your skills, get to know you as a person, and talk about what we can provide you to help build your career. We also take you on a tour of the shop.
Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?
We do require a background check, drug test MVR check, and we also have a type of personality test. Donโt worry, the personality test doesnโt find out what kind of car you are or anything, itโs mostly to help people understand how different people communicate and how to work together.
Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?
We do not have any pre-employment testing.
After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?
Decisions on hiring generally take approximately 1 week depending on the availability of the General Manager and/or Division Advisor.
Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?
We strive for a short turnaround period. From received of application, you will be contacted to schedule a prescreen within one business day. From there, the information is sent to the General Manager to review and proceed with scheduling an in--person interview.
