In addition, we provide filtered and cool water, accessible at all times, to keep everyone refreshed and hydrated. Your comfort and well-being are a top priority, and we’re committed to maintaining a productive and enjoyable workspace for our team.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

We pride ourselves on fostering a strong team environment across all of our locations. Depending on which location you choose, our teams range in size, with some shops having as few as 6 technicians and others with as many as 19 or 20. No matter the size of the team, you’ll find a collaborative, supportive group of professionals dedicated to delivering excellent service and working together to meet the needs of our customers. We believe in the strength of our teams, and each technician plays a crucial role in our shared success.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

We offer a consistent and manageable work schedule across our locations. While specific hours may vary slightly depending on the location, our typical shifts are 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM or 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Some of our shops also have a rotating Saturday schedule for half a day, allowing for a good work-life balance. Once you know which location you'd like to work at, we can provide the exact details for that shop’s schedule. We’re committed to creating an environment that supports both your professional and personal well-being.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

The company provides vital tools such as floor jacks, transmission jacks, jack stands, and engine hoists, along with any manufacturer-specific hand tools required for specialized repairs. However, we expect technicians to bring their own comprehensive set of tools, ready and equipped to handle vehicle repairs. A well-prepared tool set is crucial for success, and we’re here to provide the heavy-duty equipment you need to get the job done right.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We value your comfort during breaks as much as your efficiency on the job. Our air-conditioned break rooms are equipped with refrigerators and microwaves for your convenience, along with seating designed to accommodate multiple parties. For added relaxation, each break room features a television for entertainment, so you can unwind and enjoy your meal in a comfortable and enjoyable environment. Your well-being matters to us, and we aim to provide a space where you can recharge during your workday.

How many bays does your shop have?

The number of service bays varies depending on the location. Some of our shops are equipped with as few as 6 to 8 bays, while others have as many as 18 to 20. This allows us to tailor each facility to the needs of the area while providing technicians with ample space to work efficiently. Regardless of the shop size, every location is designed to support a productive and well-organized workflow.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

The average repair order count per month varies by facility, but one thing remains consistent—we are rarely slow. In fact, our primary challenge is ensuring we manage our large customer base and get vehicles through in a timely and efficient manner. Our shops stay busy, providing you with plenty of opportunities to work on a wide range of vehicles while maintaining the high standards of service our customers expect. This fast-paced environment is perfect for technicians who thrive on staying productive and delivering quality work.

What is your parts ordering process?

Each of our service departments at SBL Freightliner is supported by a dedicated team of parts personnel who assist in looking up and obtaining any parts necessary for repairs. Whether it's customer pay, warranty, or policy-related repairs, we have specific procedures in place for each scenario. These processes will be thoroughly taught to every technician as they become familiar with our dealer requirements and the specific workflows of each shop. We're committed to ensuring that you have the resources and knowledge you need to perform your job efficiently and effectively.

What is your policy on side work?

We maintain a strict policy prohibiting any side work that involves equipment or repairs which could potentially interfere with our customer base. This ensures that our technicians remain fully focused on delivering the highest level of service and professionalism to our customers while protecting the integrity of our business. We are committed to maintaining a clear distinction between personal projects and company work to uphold our reputation and ensure fairness for all.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We take pride in maintaining our facilities to meet industry standards, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment. However, we believe there is always room for growth and improvement. We are always open to input from both our employees and customers and will carefully consider any suggestions that may enhance our facilities or benefit the overall experience for everyone. Your feedback is valuable to us, and we are committed to making improvements that support both our team and our customers.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

In addition to providing access to online training for all of our dealer brands, we are proud to have a Freightliner-certified in-house trainer who is capable of offering manufacturer-level certifications for all chassis-related training. Furthermore, we offer external instructor-led training for other manufacturers we service, including Detroit, Cummins, and Allison. This comprehensive training program ensures that our team remains fully equipped with the latest knowledge and certifications across all key brands.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

With access to online training for all of our dealer brands, as well as the instructor-led training mentioned previously, there is a clear pathway for technicians starting at an apprentice level to advance to becoming top-paid technicians. Additionally, successful technicians will have the opportunity to become eligible for a mentor role, allowing them to further their careers by guiding and developing the next generation of skilled professionals.

Can you describe your performance review process?

During a performance review, we will evaluate your efficiency, specifically the ratio of sold versus worked hours, over a predetermined period, typically covering the previous 90 days. We will also discuss any comebacks, work-related issues, adherence to shop and manufacturer processes, as well as your overall attitude and work ethic. This comprehensive review helps ensure that all aspects of your performance are aligned with our standards.

What type of safety training is required?

Each employee is required to have a current Forklift Certification, CPR/AED Certification, and EPA 609 Certification. If an applicant does not already possess these certifications, they will be included in the onboarding process and must be completed within the first 90 days of employment.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We currently have mentor technicians who work closely with apprentice technicians. These mentors provide more than just technical support; they are responsible for ensuring that apprentices follow all shop and manufacturer procedures related to safety and repairs. In addition, mentors offer guidance, support, and encouragement throughout all aspects of the workday, helping apprentices develop both their technical skills and work habits during the onboarding process.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Periodically, our service management team visits various vocational schools in the area to discuss the many opportunities within the industry, as well as specific career paths available within our dealer group. These visits help build a strong community of individuals equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful careers. Our goal is to not only foster success on the job but also to instill habits that can positively impact their personal lives and contribute to the well-being of the broader community.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

As mentioned previously, we actively collaborate with local vocational schools and have successfully hired several apprentices who have become valuable members of our team. Under the guidance of their assigned mentors, these apprentices have flourished, gaining the skills and experience needed to grow within the industry and excel in their roles.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

We strongly support and encourage ongoing growth for all of our technicians, from up-and-coming apprentices to seasoned veterans. We expect everyone to actively participate in online training, continuously ask questions, and always seek new knowledge within the industry. By doing so, we ensure that we are providing the highest level of customer service possible. Growth, learning, and curiosity are key to both individual success and the success of our team as a whole.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

While we prefer to conduct interviews in person, we understand that some applicants may not be local or have easy access to our location. In such cases, we are happy to offer phone interviews as an alternative. Please let us know if this would be more convenient for you.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Our in-person interviews are designed to give us a chance to get to know you individually and understand your interests, background in the industry, and your perspective on your strengths and areas for improvement within your skill set. During the interview, we will also take the opportunity to tour the facility together and answer any questions you may have regarding benefits, schedules, or other processes and procedures. We believe this comprehensive approach helps both parties ensure a great fit.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Please note that all applicants must successfully pass a background check, drug screening, and DMV check as part of the onboarding process in order to be eligible for hire. These steps are essential to ensure the safety and integrity of our team and operations.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

While we do not currently perform a formal or written skill assessment before hiring, please be aware that during the interview process, you may be asked questions related to your skill set. This helps our management team gauge your abilities and knowledge to ensure a good fit for the role.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Following your in-person interview, you can expect to receive either an offer or a rejection within one week. We aim to provide timely feedback to ensure you are informed of our decision as quickly as possible.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

The full hiring process typically takes approximately seven to ten days to complete. Once all steps are finalized, we can generally determine a start date for your employment.

Medium & Heavy Duty Truck Technician Pay Range: $25.00 - $60.00/hour

The proposed pay plan for technicians at SBL Freightliner will be structured around an hourly wage that ranges from $25.00 to $60.00 per hour. This pay rate will be determined by a combination of the technician's skill set, level of training specific to our dealer brands, efficiency metrics, and input from service management. Key Components of the Pay Plan: 1. **Skill Set & Training Levels:** - The technician’s rate will be heavily influenced by their current certifications and training within our dealership’s brands (e.g., Freightliner, Detroit Diesel, Cummins, Allison, etc.). - Continuous participation in both online and instructor-led training programs is required to maintain and potentially increase hourly rates. Technicians who demonstrate a commitment to expanding their knowledge and skill set will be rewarded with higher compensation. 2. **Efficiency:** - Efficiency is a critical factor in the pay structure. Efficiency is measured by the ratio of hours worked versus hours sold. Technicians who consistently perform at a higher efficiency will have the opportunity to earn towards the upper end of the pay scale. - The efficiency bonus applies to technicians who have minimal comebacks, adhere to quality standards, and maintain a productive workflow within the service department. 3. **Managerial Discretion:** - The service management team will have final input in determining each technician's hourly rate. Their decision will be based not only on hard metrics like training and efficiency but also on subjective factors such as teamwork, attitude, problem-solving capabilities, adherence to company policies (e.g., 5S standards), and overall contribution to department morale and performance. - This allows flexibility for recognizing technicians who may not score the highest in pure efficiency but who bring exceptional value to the team through leadership, initiative, or other positive traits. 4. **Evaluation and Growth:** - Periodic performance reviews will be conducted to assess progress in training, efficiency, and overall contribution to the department. By offering a flexible hourly pay plan that rewards skill development, efficiency, and a positive work ethic, SBL Freightliner will encourage a high-performance culture while providing technicians with clear pathways for advancement and top pay rates.
