Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our shop is not air conditioned or heated but we do have a "Big A** Fan" that keeps the air circulating nicely!

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

Our fixed operations team consists of approximately 30+ team members.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Main Shop shift is 8-5 for technicians M-F and one Saturday every 6 weeks from 8-4 with lunch provided. Closed on Sunday. Quick Lane shift options are 7-4, 8-5 and 9-6 M-F and 8-4 on Saturdays (Closed on Sunday). Quick Lane hours are 7-6 M-F and 8-4 on Saturday.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We have diagnostic tools, hand tools, power tools, lifts, jacks, tire balancers, tire machine, fluid exchange equipment, brake service equipment, A/C machines, vacuums, pressure washers, alignment machine, and workbenches.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have two break rooms. One comes with a full kitchen. We have vending machines.

How many bays does your shop have?

We have a total of 27 bays.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We average approximately one thousand repair orders a month.

What is your parts ordering process?

We regularly order if the vehicle is not staying. Emergency order if the vehicle stays.

What is your policy on side work?

We allow technicians to work on their personal vehicles after business hours. Must be communicated with the Parts and Service Director ahead of time as well as get approval from the manager.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We have an in-house technician development program that we promote from within the Quick Lane to the main shop. We then offer an apprenticeship program until someone is ready to work individually in the main shop. They can receive specialty training based on their interests. We also offer online and classroom training through Ford Motor Company. This timeline is based on the skill level of the employee.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We always promote from within the dealership anytime we can. The typical route for growth as a technician would be starting at the entry-level in Quick Lane. Once they have mastered that position they move to the main shop to learn from a more experienced technician. Then after they complete the mentorship they can learn more specialized skills after that. There is always growth available because compensation is based on production/skill level that the technician works toward achieving.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We have performance reviews when warranted and we keep constant communication about production and the current status of things in the shop.

What type of safety training is required?

We conduct our own in house safety training based on OSHA requirements.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We pair newer technicians with more experienced technicians into a team of two so that the more experienced technicians can teach and have assistance at the same time.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We donate to many organizations as well as to the interests of some of our employees. Our dealership as a whole has been helping the community for many years. We routinely offer help to local schools in our county.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We are involved in career days at our local high schools within Nassau County as well as attend the tech school career days within about a 4 hour radius when they come up.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes we are open to speaking to applicants over the phone/zoom if they are not local to the area.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

We have a conversational interview where we like to communicate the expectations of the position as well as get to know the applicant and their goals.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No, but we do have a 60-day trial period to evaluate the technician's skill level.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

48 hours.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

A couple of weeks at most.

A Level Technician Pay Range: $35,000.00 - $150,000.00/year

We pay flat rate and then we have an additional bonus based on how many hours turned with a tier system.

B Level Technician Pay Range: $35,000.00 - $85,000.00/year

We pay flat rate and then we have an additional bonus based on how many hours turned with a tier system.

Diesel Technician Pay Range: $50,000.00 - $200,000.00/year

We pay flat rate and then we have an additional bonus based on how many hours turned with a tier system.

Top Shop Challenge: How do you celebrate the holidays with your team in the shop?

We do a company wide Thanksgiving Luncheon where we provide a Thanksgiving lunch with a potluck dessert. We also do a yearly Christmas Party offsite with dinner, dessert, white elephant gift game and an ugly sweater contest. It's a lot of fun!

Top Shop Challenge: What is your process for onboarding a new technician? How do you make them feel welcome while also ensuring they learn everything they need to know?

It's different depending on if you join the Quick Lane, Main Shop or Mobile Service team. However we assist with training, introductions, and teaching processes special to Paul Clark Ford. We have a culture where we help each other out. We rely on each other to give our customers the best service possible! We have a very experienced shop foreman to assist as well.
