Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our spacious Service and Quick Lane shops are clean and climate controlled.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

Our company has over two hundred employees. Usually our departments have a few dozen individuals.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Service department hours for the main store are Monday-Friday 7am-6pm and Saturday 8am-4pm. The Technicians work Monday-Friday 8am-5pm and every 4th Saturday. Quick Lane department hours are Monday-Friday from 7am to 7pm and Saturday 8-5pm. The Quick Lane Technicians work 12hr shift 4 days a week. Days off rotate on a three week pattern; every third week Quick Lane Techs have 5 days off. Both locations are closed on Sunday.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Latest and greatest tools and equipment. All specialty tools and commonly used shop tools are provided.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Employees have employee-only break rooms and an on-site diner/restaraunt.

How many bays does your shop have?

There are 48 bays in our Service Shop and 48 bays in our Quick Lane.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

We average 4,100 repair orders each month.

What is your parts ordering process?

We have a 50,000 square foot parts warehouse with over $3.5 MILLION in in inventory and growing daily. We can typically get parts the next day if not in our inventory.

What is your policy on side work?

We encourage employees to use our shop and offer deeply discounted rates for employee owned vehicles.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Our spacious Service and Quick Lane shops are clean and climate controlled. The employee-first focus is unmistakable in our fun, hard-working shop environment. Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We are highly motivated to have trained employees. The latest and greatest training will always be available to employees. This is a crucial part of being successful in an industry that is always changing.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We conduct annual performance reviews. We consider things such as but not limited to training, production, attendance, attitude, skill set, motivation and goals. We also hold "what's on your mind" open form discussions.

What type of safety training is required?

You will be trained on all tools and equipment before beginning to use them.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Our shop is well balanced between those who have been turning wrenches for decades, those who are just learning the trade, and everyone in between. Our shop is eager to mentor younger techs.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Our company has deep roots in the Wichita area. We support our community by holding fundraising events, donating to dozens of local causes, sponsoring local and youth sports, and more.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We work side by side with many local high schools and tech schools, supporting their programs and providing students with real world skills and opportunities.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

In a word: growth. Our business has continued to expand in creative ways, creating unique opportunities for employees.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Our application takes five to ten minutes to complete. It is available on mhford.com under Contact Us > Join Our Team!

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Usually we will perform a brief five to minute phone screen.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Interviews are usually in-person though we offer phone or zoom interviews to out-of-town applicants. Interviews involve a 15-30 minute discussion with one to three managers.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

All candidates must undergo a background check, Motor Vehicle Record review, and drug screen.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Usually we will have an answer within a day or two from an in-person interview.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

This varies greatly across different positions and skill levels. The entire process could be as quick as a few days.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $100,000.00 - $160,000.00/year

Wage is based on a flat rate pay scale. Between industry leading wages, production efficiency bonuses, upsell bonuses and unending work. The earning potential is limitless!

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $75,000.00 - $100,000.00/year

Wage is based on a flat rate pay scale. Between industry leading wages, production efficiency bonuses, upsell bonuses and unending work. The earning potential is limitless!

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $50,000.00 - $75,000.00/year

Lube Technician
Lube Technicians are entry level technicians that focus on routine maintenance such as oil changes, changing tires, and inspections.
Pay Range: $30,000.00 - $50,000.00/year

Wage is based on a flat rate pay scale. Between industry leading wages, production efficiency bonuses, upsell bonuses and unending work. The earning potential is limitless!

Service Advisor
Service Advisors are primarily customer focused and, as one of the faces of the shop, they are critical in keeping customers happy. Service Advisors are frequently focused on taking customer calls, relaying information to technicians, and selling repair jobs. Both technical and sales experience are helpful for this position.
Pay Range: $60,000.00 - $150,000.00/year

Wage is based on a percentage of gross from sales made.

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $12.00 - $17.00/hour

Health Insurance Offered
Coverage through BlueCross BlueShield of Kansas. Mel Hambelton Ford pays between 50% and 85% of the premium costs. Deductible ranges from $1000 to $5000. New employees are eligible for coverage 60 to 90 days after date of hire.
Dental Insurance Offered
Coverage through Delta Dental of Kansas. 100% coverage for preventative work (cleanings, xrays, etc) accepted by most dentists in the Wichita area. New employees are eligible for coverage 60 to 90 days after date of hire.
Vision Insurance Offered
Coverage through VSP. Coverage for frames, lenses, and contacts. New employees are eligible for coverage 60 to 90 days after date of hire.
Retirement Plan Offered
Managed by John Hancock. Free consulting with a Financial Planner. Employees age 21+ eligible on date of hire. Small "Let's get started" match available.
Sick Leave Offered
Six days of personal leave every calendar year. Use for any reason: illness, vacation, paternity/maternity, bereavement, etc. Unused sick time is converted to gross earnings in December. Three month waiting period for new hires.
Vacation Offered
Vacation earned upon each completed year of employment. year one and two: one week of vacation year three and four: two weeks of vacation year five and beyond: three weeks of vacation In most cases vacation is paid in the pay period in which it was earned. This means the first check after each anniversary will include your vacation pay in addition to your normal earnings.
Paid Holidays Offered
Mel Hambelton Ford will be closed for the following holidays: New Year's Day Memorial Day Independence Day Labor Day Thanksgiving Christmas Eve Christmas Day Holiday pay is earned by employees who miss a day of work due to the holiday. Full time employees are eligible for Holiday pay immediately upon hire.
ST / LT Disability Offered
Coverage through UNUM. No medical exam if employees enroll at their first opportunity. Employees may elect coverage in any amount up to 60% of their gross earnings. New employees are eligible for coverage 60 to 90 days after date of hire.
Life Insurance Offered
Coverage through UNUM. Company paid $25,000 life insurance policy for all full time employees. Employees may elect additional life insurance for self, spouse, or children. New employees are eligible for coverage 60 to 90 days after date of hire.
Uniforms Offered
Uniforms are provided to most shop employees. Employees pay $8.00 per paycheck for weekly cleaning service.
