Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shop is heated - as an added benefit, most of the shop has radiant in-floor heat, which is super comfortable during the cold months. Well-ventilated in summertime.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

At present, twelve of us: 5 technicians, a couple of apprentices, two service advisors, a service/support person helping keep the shop flow efficient, a parts man, and our company owners who work alongside our team daily.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Shop hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Everyone takes a lunch break mid-day, and we try to be flexible with the time within reason.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Quite a few, actually: OEM and aftermarket scan tools, wheel alignment equipment, ADAS calibration equipment... It's easier to say what techs are expected to provide: Hand tools and their own power or air tools for efficiency. We're pretty flexible, but we really believe that a well-equipped tech is best positioned to be a high-performing efficient tech.

What type of break room facility is provided?

We have a great breakroom in the shop. Heated and air-conditioned, and refrigerator and microwave are provided. The refrigerator has an ice maker, and purified well water is provided for drinking water in the break room. Good stuff. PS: The new conference room/training room is under construction!

How many bays does your shop have?

10, right now - soon 18

How many repair orders do you average per month?

200-230

What is your parts ordering process?

Service advisors are responsible for ordering parts. Most ordering is done electronically. We use Protractor.NET as our point of sale/shop management system.

What is your policy on side work?

We welcome our men to work on their own vehicles during evenings or on Saturdays. Also, we allow you to purchase parts at shop cost for your personal vehicle - this includes tires, too! We don't allow Sunday work in the shop. Any side work beyond a tech's personal vehicle requires approval from a company manager. We don't expect or allow our techs to moonlight outside the shop, and doing so would be grounds for dismissal. We treat you so well you won't have to, or want to.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We're into some pretty interesting stuff. We do key cutting and coding, and we offer NHOU oil undercoating as a service. We are fully equipped with Autel ADAS equipment - unique in the area, and we are presently constructing bay space to dedicate to this. Also, our techs run a completely paperless workflow. We use AutoFlow / Autotext.me for our DVI and Digital Work Order process. Techs also have computer workstations provided, and access to inkjet and laser printers for wiring diagrams, etc.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We sure do! We offer online training through Napa AutoCare, and evening update classes several times a year also from Napa AutoCare. We close the shop for the annual Vision tech expo and trade show in Kansas City each year. Offsite training is paid for by the company, and the trip to KC is all expenses paid.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

At Martin's Auto, we want each person to reach their maximum potential. We would love for each tech to become master certified, and beyond. Beyond certification, we want to develop leaders who are willing to take the initiative, while working together in a team environment.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Performance reviews? Working on that! At present, any new hire can expect a trial period of 90 days - you want to make sure it's the right fit, and we do, too.

What type of safety training is required?

Safety concerns and issues are addressed at our weekly business development meeting.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We have a working apprentice program. Each apprentice is paired with a certified technician who benefits him by helping with his projects while learning the trade. The apprentices are also enrolled in Penn Foster University's online career school course for automotive technicians.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We contribute to a Christmas fund for the residents at The Voyage, an assisted living facility in Anna.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Not yet. On the list!

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Sure, we can. If you live nearby, in-person is always best.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

We work on getting to know each other. We can meet at a neutral place - a restaurant, etc. We're going to ask you about your family, your church, and your relationship with the Lord. We will also give you a full shop tour and allow you time to ask any facility-related questions as part of the interview process. In most cases, we would have a couple of in-person interviews before extending an offer of employment.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes. Also, you can expect we will want to talk to some references - typically previous co-workers.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We provide a Berke Assessment - it's not so much a personality test as a way to help us better understand you as a person. No way to pass or fail this one. Interesting, fun to do, and we've done them on ourselves.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

We won't hang you out to dry. After we are finished with the final interview, you can expect to hear from us within a week at the most.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

That depends mostly on how available you are, and any personal / family schedule issues we might be working around at present. Let's say 3-4 weeks on average.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

Yes. We are a limited partnership, not a W2 employer. As such, it's important to us that any new hire fits with our company's ethics and Christian values. Differences in business structure to be considered when joining our team: Martin’s Auto Service is presently structured as a limited partnership. The company equity is primarily held by Gerald Martin and Silas Martin, both members of conservative Mennonite churches. The partnership is “4029 Exempt” according to the IRS form 4029. see: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4029.pdf As such: · We do not offer workmen’s compensation or hospitalization insurance. · We do not offer unemployment insurance. · We do not offer a group healthcare plan. · We do not pay in to Social Security or Income Tax withholding on behalf of the partners. We do, however, seek to offset these differences from other employers by offering excellent compensation based on experience and ability. We intend to provide a work environment that is stable and promotes daily Christian living. We view Martin’s Auto Service not just as a place to make a living, but a place to build a life for God’s purposes. “At Martin's Auto Service, we are committed to using the talents and resources that God has given us to provide a service to the community that is ethical and trustworthy, where we will never put money ahead of people.” Don't worry, this isn't as odd as it may seem. We'll talk it through and clear up any related questions during our interviews.

Master Technician Pay Range: $50,000.00 - $90,000.00/year ($24.04 - $43.27/hr)

Our most performant techs run on a flat rate. This enables them to truly take charge of their earnings, and at present, we have an opportunity that would allow an efficient, skilled flat-rate tech to earn 80-100K per year. Tech in this earning range should have well-developed diagnostic skills and be able to evaluate a list of concerns and provide recommendations without assistance.

Auto Technician Pay Range: $45,000.00 - $60,000.00/year ($21.63 - $28.85/hr)

Tech in this earning bracket will have good mechanical repair skills and be able to complete most component replacement tasks unassisted. He will be working at developing diagnostic skills and may need occasional help from a master technician when solving more difficult problems.
