Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

The shop is heated. Employee break room and offices have A/C

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

3 Ownership/management 5-8 Shop employees

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Monday thru Friday, 7am - 5pm. Saturday service may be scheduled at times and group trainings are usually conducted on a Saturday (CPR/First Aid, MSHA Annual Refresher, etc.)

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Yes, all tools are provided. Commercial and Earthmover service is fairly specialized, so we have all the necessary equipment. If you have your own tools, we can work with you to see if we have the space for your box.

What type of break room facility is provided?

The employee break room is like a kitchenette. Vending machines, water cooler (bubbler) refrigerator, convection toaster over, microwave, 2 bay sink with a sprayer and dish drying rack. Keurig and K-cups available in the customer waiting area.

How many bays does your shop have?

3 bays, 2 commercial (14'x14') and 1 Automotive with a Rotary 12K symmetrical 2-post lift. We also have 3 tire service boom trucks: 1 tandem 1 single axle - non-CDL & 1 F-550 with a mini-boom.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

About 200/month for in-shop or road service work. About 400 total invoices are done per month, which include the shop/road services as well as billed product without any labor

What is your parts ordering process?

Not usually applicable. Parts can be ordered through the customer service manager

What is your policy on side work?

Shop may be used after-hours on a case-by-case basis for "friends and family".

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We offer Tire Industry Association (TIA) trainings, both at the basic and technician level for Automotive/TPMS and Commercial Tires. We have basic programs for earthmover, farm/ag, and industrial tires. OSHA 10 and 30 Hours are available. MSHA and CPS/Basic FIrst Aid trainings are a requirement when offered.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Always the opportunity to gain experience and take on more responsibility. Performance is rewarded over longevity

Can you describe your performance review process?

Observed daily and performance - good and bad - is noted as needed.

What type of safety training is required?

Tire Industry Association (TIA) Commercial Tire Service - Basic Level, MSHA New Miner or Annual Refresher Training, CPR/Basic First Aid.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

This is a new process for us, so it will be a learn as we go as we begin working with students and schools.

Members of Associated Contractors of Vermont, South Burlington Business Association, and the Lake Champlain Chamber. Donations are made monthly and annually to many local and national charity groups/foundations.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

This is a new process for us, so it will be a learn as we go as we begin working with students and schools.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

Hopefully... fully staffed and operating as one unit where most employees are cross-trained and can perform most tasks

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We do have an application form that takes 5 - 10 minutes to complete if you have your employment history ready. We do prefer to receive resumes over a generic employment application.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We prefer to conduct interviews in-person, however phone or teams/zoom meeting may be arranged on a case-by-case basis.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

A face-to-face meeting with the Owner/Vice President, conducted as a conversation that has both general and focused questions. This usually leads to a tour of the facility and examples of service work and equipment.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We do not. If the applicant has a commercial driver's license and is applying for a driver position, then a pre-employment drug screening is required, as well as being added to the random consortium.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

Not at this time.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Depends on the position and how long it has been posted. An offer could be made at the time of the interview up to 1-2 weeks.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Varies, but usually within a few days of an in-person interview.
