Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Yes, heated and air conditioned!

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

Right now we have 9 employees including the owner.

8 to 5:30 Monday - Friday. We have a morning meeting at 7:45 and the technicians work until 5. Weekends off!

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

We have Snap On Zeus, Autel, AE Tools Factory lap top with OE Ford, Chrysler, and GM, BG flush and service centers, Hunter alignment with scissors lift, welder, plasma cutter, exhaust bender, Hot Flush machine, too many hand tools and specialty tool kits to list. I am a bit of a tool freak so if we need it I buy it. I am a firm believer in having the right tool to get the job done right.

We have a breakroom with private employee restroom, a refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, griddle (the owner is known to make pancakes for the crew often), a table with chairs, and a TV with cable.

12 bays, 1 is reserved for tire work, tools, and supplies.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

What is your policy on side work?

Employees are allowed to work on personal and immediate family cars on their own time.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We have a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Our clients are awesome. We have built a solid reputation and stay extremely busy. Our technicians get paid lunch every Friday and every other Wednesday with a training session. We have a fantastic chiropractor that comes to the shop every 2 weeks to adjust our technicians paid for by the shop.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

We will pay for training classes. We have a paid lunch training program every other week. We will reimburse technicians for passed certification tests.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

As an independent repair shop, employees have the opportunity to learn and grow as technicians. Opportunities exist for Shop Foreman and management positions. One of our Service Advisors started with the business as a lube technician. we love to train and promote from within.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Our software continually monitors performance, not to punish our employees. It is meant to help you identify and improve. Occasionally management will review the information and address any issues.

What type of safety training is required?

Safety training is integrated with our every other week training program.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We have a culture of learning and growing. Technicians are encouraged to ask for help and also to give help when needed. We all have strong skills in some areas and weaker skills in others. When mistakes are made or interesting problems are found, we gather the team so we all may learn.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We are always looking for ways to grow and support our community. We sponsor local events including an annual car show. We support a local pet charity. We try to give back and support our customers and the charities that are near and dear to them.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

I just had a lengthy conversation with a local college and look forward to visiting their students and raising awareness about the opportunities in Independent Auto Shops. We have mentored students from the local program. We have invited high school students to observe our technicians and see what a career in the auto fiel really looks like.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

I see the shop continuing to grow. I see our technicians learning and improving. I see new, young technicians entering the field. I see opportunities for more locations as new talent is brought on.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

If you find yourself struggling with the dealer or shop you are currently working at, get out and find a different place that is a better fit for you. Don't leave the field because of a bad experience. Most of what I have learned about a good employer has come from working for horrible employers.

Yes, the application can be filled out in roughly 15 minutes.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

It all depends. I am open to what an applicant feels comfortable with.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

I try to get to know the applicant. I try to find out what the abilities are, what kind of work is a favorite and what is not. I like to know what expectations are.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes
