Under The Hood
Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?
Shop has overhead heaters and two giant swamp coolers for the hot months.
What is the size of the team I’d be working with?
12 Bays total currently, two of each set aside for Express. We usually run 4-5 Express Technicians and 8 or so Main Line Technicians. New shop will have a total of 22 bays, 4 Express and Main shop 18.
What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?
M- F 7a-6p and Sat 8a-5p. Technicians work a M-F or Tu-Sa shift 8a-5p currently.
What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?
Nissan has a wide variety of Specialty tools they have us provide from Consult Diagnostic equipment, Picoscopes, and a whole list of others. We have a tool room with BG supplied fluid exchange machines and the new dealership will be one of the most state of the art Nissan Facilities known to date.
What type of break room facility is provided?
We currently have a large break room above our tool room in our back shop dedicated to the technicians only. Locker provided and a nice place to relax.
How many bays does your shop have?
12 currently with a 22 bay facility being built as we speak.
How many repair orders do you average per month?
Roughly 1000 per month and rising.
What is your parts ordering process?
We use a company called Delaerlogix to streamline our process in Advisor/Tech/Parts communication and parts ordering. Makes the process simple and easy to use.
What is your policy on side work?
With an open RO written by management and on the technicians own time, no problem. We do stick to personal and immediate family vehicles only.
Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?
Yes, Nissan has a very in depth hands on Academy for bringing technicians fullest potential out with a mixture of in class and online approach.
Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?
We like to hire/promote from within. Most 80+% of the technicians in an Express Level II or higher position have all started with us and have been brought up through the ranks.
Can you describe your performance review process?
We try and have an open and on going performance review process. I don't find that set dates once a month is always the most productive or gets the best response.
What type of safety training is required?
There are trainings within Nissan's programs and from our Senior level techs that will go over the safety that we require and expect within our shop walls.
Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?
We have a full apprenticeship program in full swing. We pair proven Express Technicians or equivalent with a Senior Master Technician for a period of 3 months to 12 months dependent on aptitude and skill level.
How does your shop get involved with the local community?
Fort Collins Nissan is very active within the community in a lot of different aspects. Our largest sponsorship currently is with Colorado State University, last year had a couple booths at Taste of Fort Collins and so many more.
Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?
I am currently in talks with Front Range Community College Automotive Program to hopefully have more interaction and involvement in providing information on what we are looking for from recent graduates and what they can expect.
Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?
I prefer to meet everyone face to face to get a true feel for who they are. More personable that way in both directions.
What do your in-person interviews entail?
One on one sit down conversation where we learn more about one another. If that goes well I usually have a follow up interview take place with our GM.
Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?
There is a background check and a check to ensure a technician or advisor at any level is insurable within the company.
Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?
No, we usually have a 60-90 day trial period to showcase skills.
After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?
Depends on the severity of the hire. Usually 2-3 days.
Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?
Anywhere from 1-5 days usually.
