Under The Hood
Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?
Yes! Our brand-new dealership will be heated and air-conditioned, controlled year-round at a pleasant 74 degrees. We have installed best-in-class automatic high-speed doors built with AI technology to detect vehicles pulling in and through to open and close quickly.
What is the size of the team I’d be working with?
We will have a team of 40-45 technicians, 7 service advisors, a drive manager, a service manager, and a service BDC built to drive traffic to our shop.
What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?
Technician hours for our shop are- Monday- Friday: 7:30am - 5:30pm Saturday: 7:30am - 2:00pm Main shop technicians are required to work every third Saturday
What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?
We have an organized Special Tool Room with the Ford-required special tools and a process for checking out and accounting for them.
What type of break room facility is provided?
Quiet break room with a TV, vending machines, sink, microwave, and a refrigerator located within the facility for easy access. We are most excited about are the technician locker rooms, which were designed similar to what Division 1 athletic programs provide their athletes. Best in class!
How many bays does your shop have?
52 bays
How many repair orders do you average per month?
We are currently in a 14 bay shop that averages 265 RO's per month. Our new 50+ bay facility is built to withstand future growth catering to the oil field, ranching, and farming industries that surround the area.
What is your parts ordering process?
An inefficient parts department can make or break a service shop. We are proud that we have a great parts department that can get parts ordered for the following day.
What is your policy on side work?
Side work is not permitted. Repair of personal and immediate family vehicles on personal time can be considered with prior management approval.
Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?
Ford of Pleasanton will be home to a brand new dealership set to be complete by October 2023. There is not a newer Ford location in the San Antonio area.
Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?
We believe in technician training, it is a must in our industry and a requirement of the dealership. Commissioned technicians are paid for all training, whether it is in-house or at an offsite location. The minimum payment is the agreed-upon hourly rate, if a technician is over 100% efficient then they are paid this amount. Offsite training is based on per day average and all expenses are paid. In addition, we also have created a number of internal training paths (Technician Career Pathway) to sharpen and develop the necessary skills to succeed.
Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?
El Toro Auto Group started in August of 2018 and has grown to 6 dealerships in just 6 years. We believe where growth happens, so do career opportunities. We can share numerous examples of career growth within our company from Technician to Master Tech, Master Tech to Shop Foreman, Foreman to Service Manager, and Service Manager to Fixed Ops Director.
Can you describe your performance review process?
I am glad you asked! Performance reviews are opportunities for us to receive feedback on what we do well, and what opportunities there are to improve. We are currently evaluating a comprehensive online platform in which we can conduct quarterly performance reviews.
What type of safety training is required?
We have an in depth safety training program. The required safety training is dependent upon the position the employee is hired for.
Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?
Mentoring with a senior technician is dependent on the individual. We believe in training and one stepping stone for a qualified entry-level technician is a partnership with a Senior Master. This is how we "grow and develop" our own. Our Service Manager and Fixed Ops Director work very closely with developing our current staff so we can maximize career potential.
How does your shop get involved with the local community?
As a family-owned/operated auto group, the El Toro Auto Group family of dealerships is very involved within our local community. Our 3 pillars are supporting: education, athletics, and first responders.
Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?
Absolutely. We are involved in our local Auto Tech & FFA programs within our local high schools. In addition, we actively recruit from UTI in Houston & Austin, South Texas Vocational Institute, and St Phillips College to provide careers for aspiring career technicians.
Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?
We try to always promote from within. From our service drive lot attendants to our maintenance technicians, and main shop technicians. If a position becomes available, we will always look internally first.
Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?
We like to phone screen all applicants to share additional information and then invite them to visit our location and see our facilities.
What do your in-person interviews entail?
We ask each applicant to allow as much as two hours for a complete interview. This interview will consist of talking with several people including the Service Manager, Director of Hiring and Development, and Fixed Ops Director. We feel this gives enough time for the Dealership and the applicant to determine if it is a good fit for all involved.
Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?
All applicants must demonstrate the ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen. Personality is assessed at the time of the interview.
Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?
The skill assessment takes place during the interview. This is based on years of being in the industry, level of experience, dealership or aftermarket training, etc.
After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?
This is on a case-by-case basis depending on how many positions we may need to fill. In some instances, an offer will be given on the day of the face-to-face interview. If an offer is not extended at the time of the interview, you can expect to hear from someone within three to five days at most.
Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?
In most cases, 1 week.
Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?
Employee retention is very important to us; It is what has propelled our auto group to withstand the tremendous growth we've experienced since 2019. In order to ensure that we keep employee retention high, we are selective on whom we decide to bring to our team and afterwards provide them with the resources necessary to succeed and create a career with our auto group.
