What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

The size of our technician team varies by location, but on average there are 15-20 technicians per shift.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

First, second, and third shifts are available with the production hours varying by store location.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Apprentice Technicians have the option to purchase a discounted tool box through our Apprentice Tool Purchase Program.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Break Rooms contain cable/satellite TV's, microwaves, refrigerators, and sinks.

How many bays does your shop have?

Dependent on store location, typically between 15+ bays.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Dependent on store location.

What is your parts ordering process?

Once the inspection process is completed the tech will enter the parts that need to be ordered, and our supply team begins ordering all the requested parts. They can order from multiple channels, OE and aftermarket.

What is your policy on side work?

CarMax associates are prohibited from entering into relationships, agreements or transactions with any individual or business that creates or even suggests an unethical business practice or a conflict of interest.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Can you describe your performance review process?

In addition to an annual performance review, individual formal reviews occur once a month. Front Line managers also perform job shadows regularly to ensure consistency in quality is being executed.

What type of safety training is required?

CarMax provides lift safety, environmental safety, refrigerant recovery and recycling training.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Technicians have opportunities to become a Mentor, working with an Apprentice throughout their training to demonstrate and teach the associate CarMax’s standards & processes. In addition, they provide the Apprentice the resources and information necessary to successfully fulfill his/her job duties and begin feeling part of the team.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

The primary way we invest in local communities is through our Volunteer Team-Builder program. When five or more associates volunteer together with a qualifying nonprofit, the organization may also be eligible to receive a donation from The CarMax Foundation. Participation in these service activities is determined by each CarMax location. In addition to the Volunteer Team-Builder program, we support high-quality programs in the areas of Health & Wellness, Education & Workforce Success, and Resilient Communities through our larger grant program. Together, CarMax and The CarMax Foundation have invested over $75 million to date in causes important to our associates.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Yes, we have partnerships with many trade schools across the country presenting many opportunities to speak with students about the benefits of joining CarMax and the automotive industry.

Yes, our online application takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

If an offer of employment is extended, CarMax will require the candidate to complete a background check and drug screen.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

There is no formal skill assessment, skills are discussed during the interview process.

A Level Technician Pay Range: $19 - $53/hour

You’ll use your strong technical knowledge to perform car services including repair and preventive maintenance so our customers can drive away safely. Develop new skills while working with a talented team and earn $19-$53/hr plus 401(k) match! Must have: Experience and ASE accreditation in any of the following: engine repair, steering and suspension, breaks, heating and air conditioning (including refrigerants and recycling). A valid driver’s license. Knowledge of health and safety compliance with physical agility. Ability to multi-task and be detail-oriented

B Level Technician Pay Range: $19 - $53/hour

You’ll flex your technical knowledge to diagnose and solve issues in our customer’s vehicles so they feel safe and comfortable. Work with a close-knit team while enhancing your automotive mechanic skills and earn $19-$53/hr plus 401(k) match! Must have: Experience in one or more of the following: engine repair, steering and suspension, brakes, heating, and air conditioning. A valid driver’s license. Knowledge of health and safety compliance with physical agility. Ability to multi-task and be detail-oriented
