Collision Technician - A Level

TITLE:

Body Shop Technician 

REPORTS TO: FLSA STATUS: 

Position Summary:

Restores damaged vehicles to their original structural integrity, function, and appearance. Restores structural dimensions and integrity to collision damaged vehicles. 

Essential Job Functions:

•Uses measuring and frame equipment to diagnose damage and return damaged frame or unibody parts to manufacturer’s specifications. 

•Use hand tools and power tools to remove or repair damaged parts, weld as needed, and properly install new parts.

•Works with a variety of metals and plastics, as well as glass, electrical, and mechanical parts. 

•Damaged vehicles must be repaired correctly so they will perform as designed, especially in subsequent collisions. 

•Performs work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with dealership and factory standards. 

•Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order. 

•Examines assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended. 

•Communicates with service advisor immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time. Ensures that vehicle is kept clean. 

•Notifies service advisor/dispatcher immediately of anything that has happened to change the appearance or condition of the vehicle. 

•Communicates with parts department to obtain needed parts. 

•Road tests vehicles when required. •Participates in manufacturer sponsored training programs, schools, and events. 

•Support other technicians and supervises work of any apprentice technicians as assigned. Keeps shop area neat and clean. 

•Maintains and is accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals. 

•Returns them to the proper place and in the same condition as when they were received. Understands and complies with federal, state, and local regulations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know, etc. 

•Saves and tags parts of the job if under warranty or if requested by the customer. •Operates all tools and equipment in a safe manner. 

•Reports any safety issues immediately to management. 

Knowledge and Skills:

•Must enjoy working on trucks, be mechanically inclined, and find satisfaction in repairs. 

•Have self-confidence, pride in work, and good hand-eye coordination. 

•Be physically fit to lift, bend, and work with both manual and power tools (80 pound lifting requirement). 

•Have patience and be willing to constantly learn. 

•Be willing to work as a team player and research repair information as needed. 

•Enjoy constant challenges. 

•Automotive/heavy equipment training a plus. 

•Post-secondary education in collision repair is preferred. 

Education and Work Experience:

•High School Graduate or GED. 

•Valid driver's license with good driving record. 

•Automotive/heavy equipment training a plus. 

•Post-secondary education in collision repair is preferred. 

Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not exposed to weather conditions. The most level in the work environment is usually moderate. 

Physical Effort: 

Work is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess strength, stamina, and mobility to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals. Manual dexterity, repetitive motion tasks. Moderate noise levels present. Respirators or other protective equipment may be required. Must be able to: 

•Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch for extended periods of time. •Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts. 

•Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment and tools; determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work. 

•Demonstrate the ability to hear and accurately interpret mechanical, technical and business information in an environment subject to noise, vibrations, etc. 

•Perform all work safely in a fast-paced work environment.
