Level II Shop Mechanic
LEVEL II SHOP MECHANIC
INTRODUCTION
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and organized Mechanic for our shop. The Shop Mechanic will perform repairs and maintenance on both equipment and vehicles at our facility. The Shop Mechanic will be diagnosing repairs with the goal of maximizing profitability, as well as have current availability of all Ellingson’s equipment fleet.
- Perform repair and maintenance on equipment and vehicles
- Operate equipment to diagnose problems and inspect equipment for defects
- Maintain proper record keeping and request work orders for all repairs
PURPOSE
The purpose of this standard procedure is to clearly define the job description of the Shop Mechanic through the outline of his/her duties, authorities, and responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITY
The Shop Mechanic is directly responsible to the specific Shop Foreman for the proper discharge of his/her duties.
DUTIES
- Diagnose the cause of any malfunction and perform repair
- Previous experience in completing routine maintenance on equipment and trucks.
- Perform on-site repairs as necessary to keep the job sites running or if unable to mobilize for safety reasons
- Maintain proper inventory of parts
- Review reports on company software to help analyze efficiencies with repair decisions
- Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of repairs
- Operate equipment to diagnose problems and inspect equipment for defects
- Show a general interest in all equipment, with an emphasis on Directional Drilling equipment
- Understand and comply with federal, state, and local regulations (such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA, etc.)
- Request work orders for all repairs.
- Must have a strong aptitude for timely and accurate coding on paperwork, including but not limited to work orders and timecards entering.
- Ensure all safety equipment is intact and operational (i.e., backup alarms, seat belts, fire extinguishers)
- Maintain high level of organization with all shop and job aspects
- Ability to work independently at least 75% of the time
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to region management, customers, and the public.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical solutions. Ability to use computers to do relatively routine data entry and calculations.
- Reasoning Skills: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Leadership Skills: Must have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and empower them self. In addition, must be a strong communicator and be able to take the initiate to function without day-to-day guidance.
- Excellent PC skills in MS Word, Excel, etc.
- Mechanical aptitude: ability to conduct and assist with a large variety of repairs and have overall knowledge of directional drilling equipment
Education/Work experience
- A minimum of 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports
- Must be certified to complete DOT inspections or capable to obtain within 6 months of hire. Knowledge of hydraulic repairs preferred
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all unites of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Practical problem-solving abilities
- Must have familiarity with diagnostic tools and programs.

DUTIES SPECIFIC TO BUSINESS GROUP (if applicable):
- Long hours and overtime will be required, especially during our peak production seasons. Travel and overnight stay will be required as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Familiarity with Horizontal Directional Drilling preferred
- Ability to read blueprints
- Strong ability to diagnose and troubleshoot repairs over the phone and computer
- Must have own set of comprehensive set of tools and toolbox to complete most mechanical repairs.
- Applicant must have CDL or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Must have a valid driver’s license
